Repairing The Breach

Begin by reading Isaiah 58:1-12 again. The focus line from Luke 4 this week is “and recovery of sight to the blind” Which son do we look at? The story of the Prodigal Son, in Luke 5, is very often treated as a story about the younger son. About his disgraceful behaviour and the father’s corresponding, ridiculous grace. Oh, and it has a little bit tagged on the end about the older one too. When you look at the story laid out however, it’s clear that this is inaccurate. The break in the story, where it begins looking at the older brother, happens in verse 25. In this translation, that second part of the story takes up 186 words, out of a total of 512 words for the whole piece. Over a third of the story. Jesus clearly put it in with intent. 68
