THE GOSPEL ACCLAMAT ION Except during Lent we begin this with the word Alleluia. The acclamation introduces the Gospel reading that will soon be proclaimed by the Priest (or a Deacon if one is present). THE GOSPEL This is the High Point of the Liturgy of the Word. It may never be omitted. As a mark of honour for the Gospel, we stand and sign ourselves with a small cross † on our forehead, lips and heart. THE HOMI LY The homily is a reflection on the readings. THE CREED This long prayer is a gathering of statements about the things that we believe as Catholics. UNIVERSAL PRAYER This is often called the Prayer of the Faithful. It is a collection of intentions addressed to God asking for the needs of the Church S H A R E W I T H Y O U R C H I L D The Gospel Acclamation prepares us for the Gospel and is an easy way for your child to participate because of the repetition of the word Alleluia. GOSPEL AS WE MARK OURSELVES with the cross you could suggest this simple prayer: Jesus be in my thoughts, in my words and in my heart. It is a practical way of involvement in the shared action of the people of God. IT IS IMPORTANT to draw the attention of your child to the message of the Gospel, if possible prior to coming to Mass. This is how we can come to know Christ more closely. HOMILY WHEN YOU SPEND A LITTLE TIME helping your child prepare for Mass, it will encourage better listening to what is being said at the time of the homily. CREED Taking one statement of the Creed at a time, read and discuss that particular part with your child as you prepare for Mass. UNIVERSAL PRAYER EXPLAIN in your own words what the Prayer of the Faithful is about. Before going to Mass invite your child to draw or write some thoughts about the needs of the people of God. Although these may not be prayed aloud at Mass, your child can still pray for these particular needs. ENCOURAGE your child to join in the response. Often it is the phrase: “Lord hear our prayer.” 12
