THE COMMUNION RI TE The Communion Rite begins with the Table prayer of the Lord, the Our Father . Most children are familiar with this prayer at this stage of their journey of faith. However, you may need to encourage them to join at Mass. At times it is sung. The children may be able to join in the sung prayer too. S H A R E W I T H Y O U R C H I L D FIND the text “Our Father...” in the Mass book and read it through with your child. Make sure that there is at least some understanding of what is being read. ENCOURAGE your child to make a collage or draw a picture to depict the ideas taught in the prayer, e.g. we ask for forgiveness of others. FIND the text of the prayer, “Lamb of God...” in the Mass book. Read it through with your child. They will not remember all of it immediately, but as their understanding of the liturgy grows, knowledge of the text will also grow. You could help your child understand that this is the plea for unity in grace with Jesus before we receive Holy Communion, “Lamb of God ... have mercy on us”. 19
