9 10 tips for moving house 1. Get organized early Once you have your move date locked in, start the planning. Packing always takes longer than you think and no-one wants to be up until 2am packing the last lot of boxes. 2. Avoid moving on a Friday or Saturday These days are always the busiest, meaning if you’re using professionals it’s going to cost you more. Try moving early in the week, or even on a Sunday. 3. Pack one room at a time Not sure where to start? Work room to room and start with the least used one and the least-used items. This should give you a good place to start. 4. Label things clearly It’s never a good time when you have a stack of boxes in front of you and you have no idea where that damn coffee is. Create a logical labelling system based on the room the items belong to. Trust us, it will make your life so much easier when it comes to unpacking. 5. Ditch the newspaper Don’t go out and spend money on newspaper or bubble wrap, you have heaps of packing material ready to go in your house. Try wrapping your delicate items in towels, bed linen or clothes instead. 6. Don’t overpack your boxes Remember, when you put heaps of items in one box, it gets HEAVYYYY. So even out the heavier items like books so it’s not all in the one box. Makes moving day a million times easier and avoids a trip to the physio. 7. Organise your electrical cords Before you pack your electronics, it’s a good idea to take a photo of what cord belongs to what. Better yet, get a bit of sticky tape to wrap around the individual cords and write what it belongs to. 8. Have a survival kit Let’s be honest, you won’t have everything unpacked the day you move in, this process can take weeks… So have a few boxes for your essentials like kettle, tea, coffee, breakfast, bed linen, phone charges, bathroom supplies, medication, children’s toys etc. 9. Get a sitter It’s a good idea to hire a sitter for your kids and pets. Move in days are stressful, so keeping them out of the house and away from potential safety hazards will relieve a bit of that stress and will allow you to focus on moving into your new home. 10. Keep track of your expenses The whole process of moving home has a lot of hidden expenses and any dollar you can save will help. So think about what you’re spending in your move and if there is an alternative.
