31 The east of Newcastle is bordered by Newcastle Harbour and two beaches, Nobbys and Newcastle. Nobbys Headland and Lighthouse is perched at the edge of Newcastle’s harbour and is perhaps Newcastle’s most iconic site. Nobbys Beach is famous for being the site a 225m freight ship, the Pasha Bulker was grounded during rough storms in 2007. Fort Scratchley Historic Site sits atop Flagstaff Hill in the city’s east and is the only coastal fort in Australia to have returned fire at an enemy vessel during a time of war. Foreshore Park and N E WC A S T L E E A S T Camp Shortland are popular recreational facilities in Newcastle East and host a range of events each year, including music festivals and sporting events. From 2017–2021 Newcastle East will form the racetrack for the international Supercar event the Coates Hire Newcastle 500.
