39 The Hill was first known as Church Hill, then Prospect Hill. The area is the site of the first town plan laid out by Henry Dangar in 1823 and is the historic heart of Newcastle. By 1860, Newcastle was emerging from its convict past and growing in economic importance as a place for coal exportation. The city’s fast growing middle class chose The Hill to establish a number of large fine houses, many of which still survive today. The Hill is one of the most popular and beautiful recreational areas in Newcastle, with King Edward Park offering both heritage features T H E H I L L & B A R B E A C H and barbeque and playground facilities. Shepherds Hill Lookout, at the foot of King Edward Park is a popular place for whale spotting during whale watching season (June to November), and the grounds have a leash free area for dogs. The Bogey Hole, situated at the foot of the cliff in King Edward Park, is one of the most significant historic sites in Newcastle. It is a man made ocean bath carved out of rock by convicts for the personal use of Commandant Morriset. Another significant historic site in The Hill is the Obelisk, the highest point in Newcastle and a navigational aid for ships entering the port. Newcastle Memorial Walk
