51 Cooks Hill grew from coal mines in the area. Land sales developed from Brooks Street onto Darby Street to create the commercial centre that is there today. Cooks Hill is one of Newcastle’s cultural hubs, with a range of galleries, boutiques and artisan stores on offer, including the Newcastle Art Gallery, housing one of the most significant collections in NSW. Darby Street in Cooks Hill is another of Newcastle’s popular eat streets and contains restaurants of a variety of cuisines, CO O K S H I L L including Asian, Middle Eastern and traditional Australian; as well as plenty of cafés to satisfy your caffeine addiction. The precinct is home to National Park netball courts and sporting ovals. Centennial Park and Nesca Park provide recreational areas with play equipment available.
