Dr Sarah Barlow is a 36 year old paediatric doctor, medical researcher, lecturer and author who was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in November 2018. Sadly, after radical surgery and six months of chemotherapy, the treatment failed and she was diagnosed with terminal metastatic (stage 4) colon cancer. This occurred because there is no screening process in place for a young person to be diagnosed with bowel cancer before they become symptomatic, and because there is limited effective treatment for a young person with advanced bowel cancer. Sarah would like to prevent other young people from dying from bowel cancer. In an effort to do this she has set up The Dr Sarah Barlow Bowel Cancer Foundation with her family, which will provide research grants to groups focusing on the early diagnosis and effective treatment of young people with bowel cancer. Bowel cancer is the second most common cancer for both males and females (after prostate and breast cancer, respectively), and the second deadliest cancer after lung cancer. The incidence of bowel cancer in people who are less than 50 years of age has markedly increased in recent years, but there is no screening test or process available to diagnose young people with bowel cancer before symptoms become apparent. Once a young person is symptomatic from bowel cancer, the cancer is usually advanced with limited treatment options. The Dr Sarah Barlow Bowel Cancer Foundation is an ACNC (Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission) registered charity that will address these issues by providing research grants to groups focusing on the early diagnosis and management of young people with colon cancer.
