A second dwelling, the Cottage at 247 Westleys Road, was built around 1900 and was a Westley family dairy and piggery for many years. The cottage originally faced towards the Gloucester River. What is now the front of the house, was originally the back, with a verandah overlooking the flats. The old road to Gloucester crossed the River down near the cutting, then ran between the front of the cottage and the river flats before crossing the paddocks to the west. ‘'Argyll' Cottage The original house contained a sitting and dining room with an open fireplace, one bedroom with an open fireplace for the parents, one bedroom for all the girls, and a visitor’s bedroom, accessible only from an outside door and always kept ready for a visitor. The boys slept, in all weather, on an open verandah off the separate kitchen building, built for fire safety away from the main house at the rear. The current office has the concrete foundation under the floor from the original copper and chip heater for the wash tub. The timber for the cottage was pit-sawn on site and there are the marks on some older walls from the saw blade. Over the years, various alterations and additions have resulted in today’s cottage. The house has been a wonderful getaway from the city for the current owners’ whilst providing overflow accommodation when needed. It has its own separate entrance from Westleys Road and has previously been rented out and could be used as a B&B or manager’s cottage. • New carpet, blinds/curtains • New fireplace • New hot water service • New bathroom • New lights/ceiling fans • Replaced piping to water tank • Water tank cleaned • New filter system for tank water • Replaced filter for river water • Roof flashing The current owners have recently carried out the following upgrades to this cottage:
