August 2020 FREO GRAPHIC 1 EDUCATION NIGHTS 4 Mark talked of his total commitment to his art of photography, walking, talking and sleeping photography 24 hours a day. This has had a huge impact on his work, with recent awards of 2019 WA Professional Photographer of the year, as well as 2019 WA Commercial Photographer of the year, and in 2019, Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographer in Architecture. One of the critical aspects of Mark’s presentation, was the careful and deliberate progression to a Professional in photography. He talked of his journey into the profession, and the support and guidance provided by the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photographers), but more importantly how he has developed as a professional both in business and in the art form of photography, and in successfully creating award winning images at the same time. I think the style of photography Mark presents, is not only minimalist and abstract but exploratory in terms of colours, patterns and geometric shapes. This allows Mark to create images that challenge the viewer to observe the transformation, from the ordinary to extraordinary, where “less is often more”. I’d like to add a note on a more recent award Mark has obtained was his stunning winning entry in the AIPP Silver Lining Awards, in the Goods and Services category, where Mark’s image not only stood out as an example of imagination and creativity but offered a very strong narrative of the current situation we are all facing. Mark was very open and honest, and talked of his journey in photography, from his early days, creating some wonderful long exposures, walking the streets of Perth for his street photography, to delivering his now acclaimed commercial and award-winning architectural images.
