FREO GRAPHIC October 2020 1 EDUCATION NIGHTS 5 Both Caitlin and Ciara (our stunning models for the evening) attended to all and sundry in posing effectively, moving this way and that way, all the while smiling and displaying a real confidence in the way they worked. We even had a couple of the newer members posing, thanks to John and Paul for getting their best faces on. With a large contingent of members in the hall, it was soon clear that not everyone would get to use the fixed flash light setups, so it seems they soon worked out that if you open the aperture and increased the ISO, you might actually get a reasonable photo without relying on a flash unit. Some of the images submitted to the club, so that we could share with the two models, emphasised how effective using ’whatever light is available’ to achieve your purpose. Then with a bit of tweaking in Lightroom or Photoshop, you could get a great portrait image. For me, one of the bigger benefits was the collaboration, chatter and engagement between members that took place during the night. I could see people comparing images on the back of their camera screens, discussing what settings they were using and talking about how they might improve what they could eventually do. So, here’s my top five tips for getting that winning portrait: 1. Talk to your model and make sure they are comfortable and relaxed when shooting (don’t be afraid to show them your images as you work). 2. Try using different lighting setups to create the outcome you want (i.e. even move the model) 3. Focus on their eyes (but get the model to focus on something specific) 4. Change the camera framing to get different results (i.e. use landscape instead of portrait), and lastly 5. Ask the model to try out different expressions, sad, angry, eyes closed, smiling, etc you never know what might eventuate. Education report October Education Report Pat Halloran Education Officer We had a great turnout for the annual AGM this year, well… was it really for the AGM, or was it for the in-house Portrait workshop we had organised? Adam and Pat organised a number of small portrait setups using their flash lighting kits, combined with varying backdrops and a couple of elegant and excited models for workshopping immediately after the AGM concluded. The portrait workshop in October was a resounding success judging by the vibrant atmosphere on the night. What a great learning experience it was! Des Lewis “ “
