Aunty Dr Rose Elu is a Torres Strait Island Elder from the Saibai chieftain clan. She is on the General Synod Standing Committee in the Anglican Church of Australia; an executive member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council (NATSIAC); a member of the Anglican Church Southern Queensland’s Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group; a churchwarden and Synod representative for the Torres Strait Non-Geographic Parish in Brisbane; a member of the Queensland Police Service’s First Nations Advisory Committee; and a family support counsellor with Relationships Australia. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Political Science from the University of Queensland, a PhD in Customary Law from the University of Hawaii, a Diploma in Counselling, and has undertaken further post graduate studies in Theology at St Francis College. Since 1980, Aunty Rose has been bringing international attention to the impacts of climate change on the Torres Strait Islands, including speaking at the UN and to global business and political leaders. As a spokesperson for the Australian Religious Response to Climate Change (ARRCC), she advocates for renewable energy and sustainable production.
