DAY 7 Sabbath: Giving Exploitation a Rest The Reverend Canon Dr Garry Worete Deverell Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. (Genesis 2:1-3) The Hebrew concept of ‘Sabbath’ is derived from a combination of cultural-linguistic streams. ‘Shevet’ means ‘to dwell’, and ‘sheva’ is the number seven. ‘Shin-Beit-Tav’, another of the linguistic streams, means ‘to cease, to end, to rest’. If you mix all these streams together, you get the idea of ending some kind of labour by dwelling in a place of rest which has something to do with fractions of seven. Still not so clear, hey? 83
