GETTING READY FOR THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION 16 At the time of your Confirmation the Bishop will use this name as he anoints you with the Oil of Chrism. Your sponsor will stand behind you and put his/her right hand on your right shoulder. The priest assisting the Bishop will say your name. Then the Bishop will say: _________ (your Confirmation name) be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. You answer: Amen. The Bishop will say: Peace be with you. And you answer: And with your spirit. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A SPONSOR? The sponsor’s function is to take care that the person confirmed behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfils the duties inherent in this sacrament (Can. 892). If possible, use your sponsor from Baptism (godparent). Your Sponsor should be: • No less than 16 years of age • A Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist and who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on.
