8 Where mountains meet the stars DARK SKY There's a reason Coonabarabran attracts stargazers from across the globe - the skies are so dark, the stars light up the night. Several years ago, Warrumbungle National Park was formally recognised as Australia's first Dark Sky Park. Low humidity and high elevation make it the perfect place to view the Milky Way in all its glory. Coonabarabran is also home to Siding Spring Observatory, the country's leading optical astronomical research facility, including the 3.9 metres Anglo Australian Telescope. As public opening hours are subject to change, visitors are encouraged to contact the site prior to their visit. Get a close-up view of the heavens with a stargazing show at a local observatory and learn more about planets, galaxies and nebulas. NOTE: "Dark Sky Park" is a prestigious official classification for low light pollution, creating the best place to view stars. Only a handful of locations in the world have been honoured with this title.
