Published for the Mount Scopus College Community Editor: Vicki Davis December 2023 Kislev 5784 From our students Since 2007 Rabbi James Kennard has educated and led us as students of Mount Scopus College. By setting a wonderful example, Rabbi Kennard has guided students to have a strong sense of Judaism, as well as a strong moral compass. Rabbi Kennard, your leadership and guidance has truly inspired us all. Your teachings have not only enhanced our knowledge and understanding of Judaism, but given us a deeper insight into the Jewish religion, encouraging us to create our own Jewish paths. At assemblies, your speeches have enlightened and inspired us, fostering an immense sense of Jewish pride and love, as well as a deep connection to our homeland, Eretz Israel. As an exceptional leader, you have also encouraged us to strive for excellence, not only in our academic achievements, but in our personal endeavours and growth. On behalf of the students of Scopus, we would like to express how incredibly grateful we are for your devotion, passion and wisdom. Your legacy and values will forever live on in Scopus’s history. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours, and we thank you immensely for your invaluable contribution. Levi Smorgon and Nina Page, College Captains 5784 Gabe Lewin and Elise Nathan, College Captains 5783, on behalf of all Mount Scopus students Rabbi Kennard: A Journey of Leadership, Laughter and Legacy In 2007, we welcomed Rabbi James Kennard into our community, commencing his leadership which would be imbued with not only his intellect and passion for education, but with a desire to leave an indelible mark of inspiration and morality on his students. I recall my first meeting with Rabbi Kennard during my involvement in the Parents’ Association. He allowed us to convince him to be a special guest in the dunking machine for a school fete. Exemplifying his humorous but distinct nature, he sat in the dunking machine filled not with water but with confetti. Rabbi Kennard’s leadership as College Principal was multifaceted. Deftly tapping into what it means to be a proud Australian and a proud Jew, underpinned by his teaching that these are not mutually exclusive, Rabbi Kennard dedicated much of his leadership to making the powerful case of how lucky we are to be diaspora Jews in such a pride-filled community. While his compelling pursuit of innovation underlined his dedication to providing his students with the best possible education. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic shook the world, however, Rabbi Kennard’s ability to lead through adversity and darkness shone brightly, as he led the school’s swift transition to remote learning, prioritising the safety and well-being of the Mount Scopus community. Rabbi Kennard has always stood as a model of decency. He ensured students knew that the questions they ask are not just legitimate, but they are of critical importance. As such, Rabbi Kennard’s legacy is not just about tangible changes. I cannot conclude his legacy in one sentence, but I can try to capture its essence: it is, at its heart, about being a proud, kind and virtuous Jew. Championing the moral imperative that Jews must not succumb to a victim narrative, Rabbi Kennard was diligent in creating an environment whereby every student can connect with their Judaism. As Rabbi Kennard bids farewell, we reflect not only on his accomplishments but on the laughter, leadership and legacy he leaves behind. Mount Scopus has been moulded by his unwavering and gargantuan impact. It is without doubt that his leadership will reverberate for generations to come. Kaleidoscope December 2023 Kislev 5784 2 From the Principal Throughout Term 4, the thoughts and prayers of the entire Scopus community have been with our brothers and sisters in Israel. Prayer services, educational opportunities, fundraising events and more have helped our students understand and empathise with the terrible tragedy of October 7 and the pain of the subsequent war. As our Mission Statement declares, Scopus offers its students a Jewish identity “within a Modern Orthodox and Zionist framework”. This has been an occasion to actualise and to understand what it means to be Zionist. To be Zionist is to see the re-creation of the State of Israel as the moment in which the Jewish people re-entered history. It is to see Israel as the centre of Jewish life and today’s fulcrum of Jewish identity. But more than these theoretical notions, it is to feel a deep and enduring emotional connection to the state, people and land of Israel. That does not imply uncritical support. We encourage our students to access and grapple with different points of view, different visions for the state and different types of Zionism. But the feeling of love for Israel, which starts in the Early Years, and grows and matures through the following years, is the essential foundation for each of the varying perspectives. Although we would never have wished for these circumstances, the present situation has been an opportunity for that love to be manifest. Our students’ passion to understand the latest developments, together with a sense of grief for the murdered, kidnapped or fallen, has reminded us forcibly just what it means to be a Zionist. Rabbi James Kennard Thank you Sharon Over more than 30 years, serving as a Sports Coach, a Phys Ed teacher, a Head of Year, Head of Middle School, Head of Secondary School and finally as Deputy Principal, Sharon Stocker’s impact on Mount Scopus and its community has been immense. Whilst in charge of the Secondary School, Sharon brought to the role a care and concern for every single student, made manifest by her detailed knowledge of each young person, their triumphs and travails, and how best to help them to learn and to grow. At all times Sharon has believed in the highest standards of professionalism, and put that belief into practice in all of her interactions with colleagues, students and parents. In this way she has created expectations and standards for all staff and students to attempt to meet. At the same time, her welcome and assistance to new teachers joining the Scopus family are legendary, and a number of longstanding teachers owe their connection to the school to Sharon’s efforts to help them settle in. For nearly all of my time as Principal, Sharon and I were an excellent team. We worked very closely together; we had very few disagreements – all of which were handled with respect and courtesy; we had many laughs and a few tears. I am deeply grateful to Sharon for all that she has done for Scopus, in so many ways. We wish Sharon many more years of happiness and fulfilment in the various educational fields that now beckon her, and especially in her much-cherished role as a grandmother. Rabbi James Kennard Sharon Stocker – Deputy Principal, Secondary, with Montana Sharp at Scopus Idol back in 2014

3 Council news The College Executive is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Dan Sztrajt as our new Principal. Dan is one of our own; an Old Collegian from Kinder to Year 12, School Captain in 1999, and a past Mount Scopus educator. For Dan this is a homecoming, and for the Scopus community it is deeply satisfying that a graduate has come full circle, and we are now privileged to be the beneficiary of his expertise. A dynamic, contemporary educator, Dan has a genuine passion for ensuring strong Jewish continuity. He shares the College’s deep commitment to academic excellence through its exceptional Jewish and secular curriculum offerings, and prides himself on fostering an environment in which the people around him flourish. Dan is a creative thinker, a collaborator by nature, and values leading with kindness, integrity and strength of purpose. We look forward to welcoming Dan and his family into our school community for the start of 2024. Amy Hershan College President on behalf of the College Executive Premier’s VCE Awards Mazal Tov to our 2022 Premier’s VCE Award winners: • Abby Schwarz – English • Jesslyn Simon – Religion and Society Premier’s VCE Awards recognise the outstanding results of individual students and are based on VCE subject results. We are extremely proud of our students who have earned Premier’s VCE Awards, which are a fitting tribute to the hard work and commitment of the students and the dedication, expertise and support of their teachers. Kol HaKavod! Dan Sztrajt Students write messages of support for IDF soldiers Abby Schwarz Jesslyn Simon Am Yisrael Chai The Scopus family has truly come together to support Israel during this extremely difficult time. The care and concern shown to each other by staff, students, parents and the wider school community has been heartwarming and very much appreciated. Mincha prayer services have been held daily for Secondary students and although optional, there has barely been a spare seat in the shule. Our Co-Curricular Jewish Education team has run regular lunchtime briefings and updates for Secondary students, allowing them to ask questions and share how they are feeling. Extended bayit (form assembly) sessions have also allowed students and teachers to share stories of family members in Israel and read tefillot. Lunchtime activities have seen students write cards for Israeli soldiers and for their peers in Israeli schools. The cards have been posted and are on their way, in the hope of lifting spirits from the other side of the world. During Kabbalat Shabbat, our Year 6 students have lit three candles, two for Shabbat, and one to remember one person kidnapped into Gaza. Our thoughts and hearts are with the people of Israel, always. Primary and Secondary students have also run numerous fundraisers which have been overwhelmingly supported. We have endeavoured to protect our younger students, while also informing and educating our more senior Primary students in a measured and appropriate manner. Mount Scopus families were also invited to join the regular Secondary GBH Friday night minyan for a special Kabbalat Shabbat B’Yachad and to come together as a community. Scopus reached out to support families arriving from Israel. We welcomed them into our community and ensured an expedited and smooth enrolment process, to help restore some sense of stability for those who have suffered. Counselling continues to be offered to all staff and students, and we continue to offer support, particularly through our Heads of Year, School Psychologists and Counsellors, and our Co-Curricular Jewish Education team. Mount Scopus College stands with Israel. Am Yisrael Chai.

Ashkanasy by a point Melbourne turned on a spectacular spring day for the Primary Athletics Carnival. After the disruptions of the pandemic years, and a postponed event in 2022 due to bad weather, it was wonderful to welcome families back to the Skolnik oval. Parents watched from the stands as our students from Prep to Year 6 competed in a variety of individual and team events and relays. It was a very close competition this year, and we congratulate Ashkanasy house, who won by just one point. Giving back As part of their Community Service Program, Years 7 and Year 8 classes joined together to run a food drive, with all items donated to Souper Kitchen, to help feed those who may not always know where their next meal will come from. Souper Kitchen works to provide food for those experiencing food insecurity in the community. They help feed over 1000 people every month. Students heard from Souper Kitchen guest speakers and learned more about the organisation. Later in the term Year 7 students learned about food insecurity, and had the opportunity to cook delicious meals that were donated to FoodFilled – an organisation dedicated to combating food wastage and alleviating hunger. Jubilant students in Ashkanasy Students learned about the important work of Souper Kitchen

6 Kaleidoscope December 2023 Kislev 5784 Scopus Flashback Marc Besen z”l, was a champion of Scopus and a tireless fundraiser for our school. As a parent of four young children at the College in the mid 1960s, his role actively evolved over four decades. All-the-while, Marc was a visionary. Developing a lifelong passion for the arts with his wife Eva, the College benefitted from several projects including the Besen Family Performing Arts Centre, opened in 2000. ‘I had a dream’ – Marc’s handwritten opening ceremony speech is a valued artefact in the Archive collection. He dreamed of a ”‘home’ where creative ideas could achieve dramatic quality… arouse our consciousness to human emotions and social problems… where all the arts and our students could reach for the stars”. That dream became a reality, and in 2024 we look forward to celebrating the reality of 75 years of our amazing school. February 8, 2024, marks the 75th anniversary of the first day of Mount Scopus Memorial College in St Kilda Rd. Stand by for compelling flashbacks throughout 2024. Parents’ Association It has been a busy and successful year for the Parents’ Association. Suzy Suss and Romy Borensztajn, Co-Presidents, thank all our dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors for their support. We have focused on community support during the challenging last few weeks. The parent community united for Israel with a B’Yachad function, a special Kabbalat Shabbat at GBH, and PA morning tea for teachers. All money raised from lunch orders, tuck shop and challah stalls was donated to Israel. Our Father’s Day stall, coffee morning, book sale, challah bake, challah covers, mango fundraiser and sports day were all well attended. This success allowed us to purchase much needed equipment for GBH, FKI and SFPS. At the end of 2023 we farewell and thank Suzy Suss for her dedication as PA Co-President. We also say goodbye and thanks to two dedicated volunteers: Romy Donner, GBH Lunch Order Co-ordinator and Mel Raleigh, Mother’s/Father’s Day Stall Co-ordinator. We look forward to a wonderful 2024. Goodbye and toda raba At the end of every school year we say farewell and thank you to staff who are leaving, some after over 15 years of service. Earlier in the year we said goodbye to Jorge Santander after 20 years in Maintenance at the Gandel Campus; Bridget McDermott after over 24 years of creative flair as a Secondary Art teacher and Faculty Leader of the Loti Smorgon School of Visual Arts; Jason Lord after 20 years as Production Manager in the Besen Family Performing Arts Centre; and Sue Vermes after nearly 15 years as Garden Educator, designing, creating and bringing the Scopus Kitchen Garden program to life. As the school year draws to a close, we farewell Dani Aisen after almost 35 years as a much loved Primary Music teacher; Elka Borden after more than 25 years as an outstanding Primary Jewish Studies and Hebrew teacher across multiple campuses; Dean Kuran after over 18 years as a dedicated Primary teacher; Tessa Fisher after almost 15 years as a respected and incredibly patient Secondary Maths teacher; and Sharon Stocker, Deputy Principal – Secondary after over 35 incredible years (read Rabbi Kennard’s tribute to Sharon on page 2). We wish each one of them all the very best and thank them for their dedication, commitment and care of our students. Bat Mitzvah chagiga Year 6 girls enjoyed a special Bat Mitzvah chagiga, as the culmination of their various Bat Mitzvah programs this year. The morning was an opportunity for the students to celebrate this milestone all together, and included Rosh Chodesh Kislev tefilla in the Bursztyn Synagogue, followed by a simcha-breakfast and rauch in the Rose Hall. Secondary students shared their reflections on what they would tell their 12 year old selves, and the Bat Mitzvah girls learned about the mitzvah of hafrashat challah as they prepared challah to take home and bake. Our Bat Mitzvah program aims to inspire life-long connections to Judaism and prepares our young women to be active members in the community. Throughout the program girls take part in a wide-range of learning experiences to mark their Bat Mitzvah, in a way that suits their individual strengths and interests. Mazal Tov to all our Bat Mitzvah girls of 2023.
