39 Oxygen Management 1 2 3 4 Know your client’s breathing patterns & risks: • How far can they walk without oxygen? • Check care plan for alerts and administration orders • Ensure no-one is smoking in the house where oxygen is being used • Keep oxygen at least 2 metres away from open flame or heat source • Reduce clutter around equipment to reduce risk of falls • Ensure equipment is undamaged and dust free Before the task: • If cylinder is used: check oxygen cylinder is current one in use (check for label “Use me first”) • Check mask and tubing: ensure they are clean and there are no kinks in tubing • Assist client to upright positioning • Check for absence of Vaseline products or oils on face • Position the equipment close to the client • Connect tubing • Provide calm and reassurance to maximise client’s deep breathing technique During the task: • Position mask / prongs and ensure client is comfortable • Check for skin irritation around nose and behind ears • Cylinder: turn the black valve in the direction of the ‘open’ arrow shown • Cylinder: turn the white valve to move the gauge to the level required (as per care plan) • Cylinder: Check gauge is on top of regulator is registering above red line • Concentrator: it increases in heat – keep away from curtains After the task: • Assist client removing mask / prongs as required • Turn off equipment & restore equipment to storage area • Offer client fluids Document in the Client Journal: • Changes to breathing patterns • Non-compliance with protocols • Reports of dizziness, feelings of being unwell 5 Guide for consumers, carers and workers
