55 1 2 3 4 Know your client: • Understand what is impacting on their mobility changes • Check care plan and be aware of their medical conditions that may increase risk of falls, impact on energy levels or have an affect on respiratory health • Know their walking aids, how and when they should be used Before the task: • Check their manual handling instructions and footwear • Check the environment for obstacles or clutter • Ensure lighting is adequate for the task • Gather equipment (walking frame, quadstick, glasses) and explain next steps During the task: • Ensure consumer is not rushed and understands the task • Prompt use of chair arms for leverage, check feet positioned for good balance • Guide hands to correct position on frame • Stand to side of frame / quadstick • Watch for signs of dizziness, anxiety or unsteadiness • Walk alongside and alert consumer as needed to obstacles After the task: • Consider if any changes evident • Check consumer is comfortable • Position aids within reach Document in the Client Journal: • Changes or concerns 5 Walking with Aids Guide for consumers, carers and workers
