CO-CURRICULAR 119 ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE STRATHFIELD LUMEN 2024 Our Band and Orchestra programs have flourished this year, showing remarkable growth in both new students learning instruments and the dedication of returning players. It is exciting to see so many young musicians joining us; for the first time since COVID, we have launched a Senior Jazz Orchestra and, thanks to the enthusiastic intake of new students, created a Training Band to nurture and support our Junior Band. These milestones highlight our students’ commitment and the pride we share with their families in their musical journeys. The year began on a high note with our Music Camp held in the first week of Term 1. This year, we expanded to include the Orchestra alongside the Concert and Symphonic Bands, and it was an incredible success. Guest conductors, including Mr Peter Ellis, Mr Alex Pringle, and returning mentor Mr Craig McGown, led the boys in intensive sessions, enhancing both their musical skills and camaraderie. A standout memory was the Samba workshop with Mr Tom Harding, where the boys played Samba instruments together in the Gym, filling the space with energy and rhythm. It was truly inspiring to witness their passion and teamwork. Soon after, our senior students performed at the Opening Mass and High Achievers’ Assembly, held at the Sydney Olympic Tennis Centre. Playing in such a unique space brought new challenges in acoustics, but the boys rose to the occasion, delivering a performance to remember. Our commitment to excellence was evident once again at the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival, held at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. This year, our Concert Band achieved a remarkable Gold, building on their Bronze from the previous year. The Orchestra, too, impressed with a welldeserved Bronze, and our newly reformed Jazz Orchestra made a stunning debut with a Silver. Such accomplishments reflect our students’ dedication and growth, and we are so proud of their achievements. This year’s Performing Arts Production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory saw a select group of senior boys in the pit band, who mastered a complex, professional musical score. Their exceptional skill and collaboration with the on-stage performers led to a polished, memorable show—a testament to the hard work and passion they bring to their craft. In August, we held our annual Performing Arts Showcase at Marie Bashir Public School, a joyful celebration of our ensembles’ progress. It was a pleasure to share these musical accomplishments with our College community, from the first notes of the new Training Band to the powerful performances of our Concert Band and Orchestra. Now, as the year draws to a close, our students prepare for the Instrumental Program Recitals in November and, finally, a rousing performance at Speech Night at the Quaycentre. ENSEMBLE COORDINATOR Dr D Taylor Ensemble Coordinator The achievements of our students this year are nothing short of inspiring, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to them and their families. Each performance, award, and breakthrough moment reflects the enthusiasm, commitment, and pride that drive our Band and Orchestra programs. It has been an extraordinary year and we look forward to celebrating many more milestones in the future.
