CO-CURRICULAR 124 ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE STRATHFIELD LUMEN 2024 CHESS “Life is a kind of chess, with struggle, competition, good and ill events.” - Benjamin Franklin Since its reinstatement in 2022, the Chess Co-Curricular program at the College has experienced steady growth in both popularity and student engagement, as clearly demonstrated during the 2024 season. This year, the program boasted six teams, ranging from Years 7 to 12, all comprised of strong and enthusiastic players. The influx of interest was particularly evident among the Junior groups, where the new intake of students from the Junior School injected fresh energy into the squad, bringing with them a wealth of talent that matched their enthusiasm. The 2024 season also marked the addition of two new coaches to our Chess Squad, Mrs Karen Spires and Old Boy Michael De Meio (‘23), a former Chess Squad member. Both coaches played an instrumental role in the students’ development during training sessions and offered unwavering support and encouragement during competitions. Another significant milestone in our co-curricular journey was the appointment of Anthony Karnaout as Chess Captain for the 2024 season. Anthony has been a dedicated member of the Chess Squad since its revival in 2022, consistently competing at the highest level within his division and team. Throughout his tenure, he has exemplified outstanding sportsmanship, demonstrated a relentless commitment to honing his skills through consistent practice and analysis, and maintained a positive attitude towards his teammates and fellow squad members. These attributes, among others, made him exceptionally deserving of the title of Chess Captain in 2024. As the season concluded, our Chess Squad achieved varying but overall positive results. The Junior A team, consisting of Xavier Tan, Julian Reinhardt, Myles Chan, Andrew Parra, and Alexander Dang, emerged as our most successful team. They concluded their season just two points shy of first place, ultimately entering a knockout round against The Scots College. Despite securing 1.5 points across the four boards, they narrowly missed advancing to the finals. In closing, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the entire Chess Squad for their dedication and active participation throughout the 2024 season. I look forward to witnessing the continued growth of this remarkable co-curricular program in 2025 and beyond.
