CO-CURRICULAR 172 ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE STRATHFIELD LUMEN 2024 ATHLETICS & CROSS COUNTRY Mrs R Simms MIC Athletics & Cross Country The 2024 Cross Country and Athletics Season saw new faces, new coaches, chivalry, camaraderie, and an oath to succeed. The team dynamic also changed this year. Under the leadership of Captain Nathan Campbell and Vice Captain Xavier Caristo, the team welcomed back old faces as well as numerous new, young, and eager students. The Cross Country Squad embarked on their monthlong competitions with the Saturday invitationals in May. Characterised by rain and mud, athletes traversed a wide range of terrains, honing their skills and developing bonds. SPC had another strong team representing the College at the Independent Sporting Association (ISA) at the Equestrian Centre. A select group of athletes gained selection for the ISA Squad that competed at the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) carnival, including Ben Proszenko, who has proved himself to be a resilient long-distance runner this year. We were lucky with the weather as our Athletics season began in Term Three, meeting bright and early every Saturday at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre (SOPAC). Every athlete participated, perfecting their skills and trying new disciplines. For the squad, the ISA championships are a highlight of our calendar. Special mention needs to go to our podium finishers: Jack Ronzini, Scott Dunlop, Christian Harada, and Christian Caristo, to name a few. However, it was watching Jack Taylor excel in both the 200m and 400m that was the highlight of the season. Overall, we came away with sixteen representatives who competed at the CIS championships. An amazing achievement, knowing the hard work each athlete had put in. It would be remiss of me not to mention the efforts of our coaches this season. Old Boy Jonathan Meaker returned as our distance coach, while Matthew Ibrahim focused on our sprint athletes. We also welcomed Alex Del Popolo and James Stewart to coach our field events. As always, a massive thank you needs to be said to Mr Angelatos, Mr Pais, Mr Boggs, and Mr Calavassy for their support and dedication to our squads. I would also like to pay a special note of gratitude to the parents, whose unwavering support has been instrumental in making this season a huge success. Your support really does make the difference. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to the young athletes of St Patrick’s College. Your passion, humour, and commitment have made this season such a success.
