ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE STRATHFIELD LUMEN 2024 YEAR 6 COORDINATOR INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY 072 Year 6 in 2024 was a flurry of energy, activity, and enthusiasm. In every aspect of College life, I was impressed by the boys’ willingness to engage in the many opportunities presented to them, from the seemingly never-ending list of volunteers who wanted to lead the Angelus, to the buzz generated by Book Week costumes, and the passion demonstrated at the Junior School Athletics Carnival. There were, however, some particularly memorable moments this year. In March, we visited Canberra and explored many landmarks of the capital, including Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, Questacon, and the Australian Institute of Sport. In addition to the academic learning gained, the students also strengthened their resilience by being away from home for three days. Term 2 began with a Student Leaders’ Afternoon Tea, where our Year 6 Leaders were given the opportunity to interact with their peers from Santa Sabina, deepening their understanding of the meaning of leadership. Our boys were able to put some of these skills into practice at our fortnightly Homeroom Briefings, where they not only had the opportunity to speak before a large group of over 200 staff and students but were also asked to consider the messages they wanted to deliver to their peers. Among the many fond memories I will cherish from this year are the YCM awards presented at our fortnightly Year Meetings. Every fortnight, I would look forward to reading the heartwarming comments made by the boys as they nominated their peers for positive learning habits, commitment to co-curricular activities, and personal qualities such as kindness, respect, and responsibility. The anticipation, followed by applause and cheers each time the Year 6 Champion of the Fortnight was announced, was a testament to the camaraderie within the cohort. House spirit was on show during our Football and Oz Tag Competitions, which were organised with great skill and professionalism by the boys. The Junior Oval saw many heated games, accompanied by perceptive commentary on the sidelines. These lunchtimes were an opportunity to develop the boys’ responsibility and organisation and, of course, were a highlight of many school days. Our theme for the year, “grow strong roots so you can weather any storm,” framed the strengthening of the boys’ academic, spiritual, social, emotional, and physical growth over the course of the year. I pray that the relationships, understandings, and confidence they have developed this year will help them navigate whatever the future may bring. It has been a privilege to guide the young men of Year 6 in 2024, and I wish them the very best of luck as they progress to the next stage of their schooling and development. I would like to thank the dedicated Year 6 class and specialist teachers, the supportive Stage 3 team, our wonderful parents, and, of course, the boys themselves, who have helped me to grow in my role.
