LIBERATING EDUCATION 097 ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE STRATHFIELD LUMEN 2024 As we wrap up another exciting school year, it’s time to celebrate the incredible scientific achievements and discoveries that have inspired us all. From Generative AI helping us in drug discoveries to the rise of biochemicals to minimise the impact of technology on our Earth, inspire our students to become more scientifically literate and actively respond to the needs of our community. This year’s Science Week was a resounding success, filled with exciting activities, inspiring presentations, and handson experiments that ignited the curiosity of students and teachers alike. The week-long celebration of science brought the entire school community together to explore the wonders of the natural world and the marvels of modern technology. Some of the activities included liquid nitrogen show, chemistry show, periodic table muffin activity and dissections. Year 10 participated in the Stile Escape rooms set-in real-world scenarios to provide students with collaborative hands-on activities. SCIENCE Mrs S Chander Head of Science This year also led to Year 6 students participating in experiments in the new laboratories in the Scientia building. They discussed issues like dementia and how it impacts our aging population which was followed by looking at the model of a human brain and sheep brain dissection. Year 7 students received their Bunsen burner licences. Year 8 engaged in their first dissections as they studied body systems. Year 9 were introduced to atomic structure and biological systems and Year 10 were introduced to car safety and safe driving. Science faculty is looking forward to 2025 as we implement the new Science syllabus to Year 7 and Year 9. Teachers have been busy writing the new programs to ensure that the lessons are contextual, engaging and informative to develop critical thinking skills our students. I sincerely thank all faculty members and laboratory assistants who worked tirelessly to make this year successful.
