10 | Mid-Western Living | SPRING 2026 LOCAL BUSINESSES TAKE CENTRE STAGE Members of Business Mudgee, Gulgong Chamber of Commerce and Rylstone Kandos Business Chamber gathered at Club Mudgee in June for a special ViceRegal Business Reception with Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales, and Mr Dennis Wilson. Hosted in the Starlight Room at Club Mudgee, the evening brought together members of all chambers, marking a significant opportunity for the three organisations to come together and represent the region’s diverse business community. Throughout the reception, local business owners and community leaders had the opportunity to speak with the Vice-Regal couple about the industries, enterprises and people shaping the region, while also sharing some of the challenges faced by businesses operating in regional communities. The evening highlighted the importance of collaboration across Mudgee, Gulgong, Kandos and Rylstone. While each town has its own identity, history and business landscape, the reception demonstrated the strength that comes from sharing ideas, building relationships and speaking with a collective regional voice. Business Mudgee, the Gulgong Chamber of Commerce and the Rylstone Kandos Business Chamber thanked Her Excellency and Mr Wilson for taking the time to visit the region and hear directly from its local business representatives. SPRING 2026 | Mid-Western Living | 17 “It’s not just about money,” he says. “It’s about what the mine does for the community — and that’s all positive.” Blink and you might miss Cooyal – it’s the kind of place that doesn’t ask for much attention. But it gets it in spades from its neighbouring coal mining community. For David Miller, owner of the Cooyal Hotel, the relationship between his pub and the nearby mines isn’t just good for business – it’s the backbone of the community. David says the mines support the pub and the community, creating a wide range of benefits for locals. Wilpinjong crews often make their way to the Cooyal Hotel after a shift, settling in for a meal and a casual catch up in a place that feels like home. Most weeks the team at the pub prepares and delivers burgers out to the Wilpinjong mine site – a mutually beneficial arrangement that keeps the workers happy and the pub enjoying reliable, regular business. Away from the pub, David sits on the Cooyal Hall committee – a volunteer role that keeps the social infrastructure of the village ticking. The hall, like so much in small communities like this, has benefited from grants provided by the mines. Ask David where he stands on coal and mining, and he doesn’t hesitate. He’s pro-coal. Pro mines. He’s watched what the industry means for the people around him — the jobs, the spending, the grants to the hall. David says the pub is so close to the mine that on a still evening you can sometimes hear the low hum of operations drifting across the valley, a sound that, for locals, doesn’t signal intrusion. It signals work, security and prosperity. Wilpinjong Environment and Community manager Kieren Bennetts said the mine employed local people who supported local businesses. “Our people live in Mudgee, Gulgong, Rylstone, Kandos and the smaller communities within our region. 24 | Mid-Western Living | SPRING 2026 BOWDENS SILVER A step closer to more jobs for the communities of Lue, Rylstone, Kandos and Mudgee Bowdens Silver is a local resource company, 100% owned by Australian public company Silver Mines Limited. Bowdens Silver is the largest undeveloped silver project in Australia and one of the largest globally and is located near Lue, approximately 26km east of Mudgee in central New South Wales. The project will mine silver, as well as zinc and lead, via open-cut mining methods over 16.5 years. Silver will account for approximately 85% of the mine’s total revenue. Mining will involve the extraction and processing of up to 2 million tonnes of ore material per annum to produce a silver/lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate for sale and smelting off site. Why is this project important? The Bowdens Silver mine proposal is a $350 million project that will create more than 320 jobs during construction and more than 220 ongoing jobs for the local communities of Lue, Mudgee, Rylstone and Kandos. The project has the potential to future-proof employment in the region, helping locals continue to live and work in their communities for decades to come. Silver is a highly sought-after metal used in a range of high-tech industries, including electric vehicles and photovoltaic cells in solar panels. Australia has the potential to strengthen its position as a reliable supplier of critical and high-value minerals, supporting industries essential to a more technologically advanced and lower-emissions future. For Lue and neighbouring townships, a project of this scale has the potential to contribute to the longterm strength and resilience of the local community, while connecting a small regional NSW community to industries and technologies being developed and used around Australia and the world. For regional NSW, the benefits can extend well beyond the mine gate, creating local employment, supporting regional contractors and businesses, increasing economic activity and providing opportunities for people to build careers close to home. For Lue and surrounding communities, this could mean more people living, working and investing locally. Closer to final determination The Bowdens Silver project is close to returning to the Independent Planning Commission (IPC), following the completion of its comprehensive assessment work. Once the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has completed its assessment, it will be handed over to the IPC to make its determination. We encourage the community to provide their supportive submissions to the IPC once the project is open to its comments phase. The project remains underpinned by robust, independently reviewed studies, with a continued focus on addressing community concerns and meeting all regulatory requirements. Updated biodiversity studies have been provided to reflect the most current legislative requirements. This is not a new project, it is the same project, now returning with updated information. The core design, scale and intent of the project are the same. There has been no material change to the key elements that formed the earlier assessment and that was previously approved.
