Nature & Unique Stays Forest lodges, glamping sites, yurts, tiny cabins and campgrounds provide unforgettable escapes for travellers seeking peace, nature and a deeper connection with New Caledonia’s spectacular landscapes. Travel Tip: Accommodation fills quickly during school holidays (December–January and July–August). Booking several weeks—or even months—in advance is recommended. GETTING AROUND Exploring New Caledonia often means combining different modes of transport to experience the full diversity of the archipelago. Discover Grande Terre by Road Hiring a car from La Tontouta International Airport or Nouméa is the best way to explore Grande Terre at your own pace. Well-maintained roads, relatively short driving distances and scenic coastal routes make it easy to discover beaches, mountains, villages and Kanak tribes. Allow around 5½ hours to drive from Nouméa to Poum, at the northern tip of Grande Terre. Travel Tip: New Caledonia drives on the right-hand side of the road, like mainland France. Visitors from Australia and New Zealand should take extra care when driving. Fuel stations become less frequent on the East Coast, in the Great South and in remote areas, so it’s wise to plan ahead.
