Sutherland Shire Domestic Violence Informtion and Support Guide 5 The Power and Control Wheel Power and Control are at the centre of the wheel. Each segment represents particular tactics which may be used to exert and maintain control. The wheel above is adapted from the Duluth Model: Power and Control Wheel, developed by the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project (Duluth MN) and produced by the National Centre on Domestic and Sexual Assault. (Source: https://www.theduluthmodel.org/ ) The abusive partner rules by fear, using a wide range of methods to build up power and control Making and/or carrying out threats to hurt your partner, yourself, a friend or family member. Rape and sexual assault using manipulation/guilt/force. Threatening to leave or commit suicide. Threats to report them to immigration/ welfare services. Causing fear by using looks or gestures. Abusing pets. Smashing things/property destruction. Stalking. Causing fear through dangerous or intimidating behaviour. Using aps or social media to stalk or harass. Harass by phone, email, text. Pretend to be them online to cause problems. Use of technology to take/ distribute sexual images and films without consent. Public or private humiliation. Gaslighting/making them think they are crazy. Blaming all the relationship problems on them. Putting them down. POWER & CONTROL Controlling what they do. Restricting them from leaving the house. Restricting or manipulating their relationships with others. Using jealousy and ‘protectiveness’ to justify actions. Making light of the abuse and not taking their concerns seriously. Saying it didn’t happen. Saying your actions were justified by something they did. Saying they are to blame. Making them feel guilty about the children. Using the children to relay messages. Using visitation to harass and intimidate. Threats to take or hurt the children. Believing that being a man gives you the right to: make the decisions, say what is ‘their’ role and responsibility, dismiss their ideas or contributions, refuse to accept criticism, claim ultimate ownership over shared things and expecting or demanding sex. Preventing them from getting or keeping a job. Making them request money or giving an allowance. Taking their money. Restricting access to shared accounts. Lying about or hiding income and assets.
