Judges award a magnificent line of sheep from the Inders The Inder family, Wattlegrove Partnership, Dunedoo, claimed their fifth win in this year’s Chris Naake Memorial Flock Ewe Competition. The annual competition, held over two days in February, encompasses the Mudgee, Hargreaves, Ilford, Rylstone, Goolma and Dunedoo districts. Eleven flocks lined up for judging under the scrutiny of Sam Phillips, Yarrawonga, Harden, and Frank Kaveney, Tallawong, Yass, with the Inder’s Langdene-blood ewes taking the top spot. Mick and Wendy Inder join 2400 ewes each year at “Mayfield”, half to Merino sires and half to terminal sires. Mick said they have a strong focus on wool, cutting an average of 8kg per head of 18-micron wool. When offering judging comments, Frank described the Inder’s flock as a “magnificent line of sheep”. “They’ve really grown to their genetic potential,” he said. They were awarded first place in the medium/strong wool section as well as the Peter Gallagher Memorial Trophy for People’s Choice. Second in the medium/strong wool section was Peter and Tina Doherty, “Roine”, Goolma. Using genetics from Trynow for three decades, their flock averages 18.1-micron and cuts 6.7kg per head. Mark (Butch) and Fiona Pilley were first place in the superfine/fine wool section with a run of ewes from their Hargraves property, “Gundowda”. They have been using Langdene genetics for the past three years, with Garry Cox classing the 16.9-micron flock. Judges noted significant improvement since the previous competition and said it was headed in the right direction. “These sheep will pay your bills,” Sam said. The Roseville Park-blood ewes of Steve and Tracey Evans, “Coomber”, Rylstone, placed second in the superfine/fine category. Flocks from Ben and Shereen Price, “Old Tunnabidgee”, Pyramul, and Mark and Karen Croake, “Killarney”, Sallys Flat, were highly commended. 26th Chris Naake Memorial Flock Ewe Competition Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 February 2025 1– 2– 3– 4– – 123 –
