TOP SIRE 2025–2026 NEW MEMBERS NEW MEMBERS In the past year there have been five studs registered with the NSW Stud Merino Breeders’ Association. Contact details for these studs are contained in the NSW Merino Stud Directory 2025–2026 in the back pages of this publication. Cassilis Park Poll Poll F. No. 6025 – Cassilis This stud was registered in July 2025 by James Armstrong, trading as Cassilis Park Pty Ltd, by the transfer of 15 rams, 500 ewes, 190 ram lambs and 200 ewe lambs from Cassilis Park, F. No. 4578, and incorporating semen, rams and ewes from Moorundie, Poll F. No. 1502. Coonong F. No. 25 – Urana This stud was founded in 1907 when Sir Samuel McCaughey transferred 1000 ewes from Goolgumbla, F. No. 42, of which 500 were selected from a large purchase of Cobran, F. No. 22, ewes. These ewes and their selected progeny were always joined with Peppin rams and kept separate. The other 500 ewes were by Boonoke, F. No. 7, rams from Peppin blood Bundure, F. No 13, ewes. These ewes and the pick of the ewe progeny by Peppin blood rams were always kept separate on Coonong and known as the Long Wool stud. In 1954, Coonong No. 2, F. No. 224, was amalgamated with Coonong No. 1, F. No. 25, the name being altered to Coonong. In 1959, D.R. McCaughey formed a company trading as the Coonong Pastoral Company which took over the stud. Following the death of Sir Roy McCaughey, the stud and property were purchased in 1972 by T.A. Holt, together with the trading name. Following the death of T.A. Holt in 1973, the stud was carried on by his family and subsequently resigned in July 2007. The stud registration was renewed in July 2024 by Thomas and Sophie Holt, along with their son Thomas, who will continue the stud at their Urana property. Jilliby F. No. 4009 – Glen Fergus This stud was founded in November 1983 by R.E. and D.V. Maguire with the purchase of four rams and 102 ewes from Uardry, F. No. 79. In 1998, Richard Maguire was brought into the stud. It was resigned in December 2017. The stud registration was renewed by Clyde Maguire and Richard Maguire in September 2024, trading as R. Maguire and K. Thompson, following the purchase of 80 stud ewes, one stud ram and 50 doses of semen from Langdene, F. No 3863, as well as 50 doses of semen from Roseville Park, F. No 4166. Jilliby Poll Poll F. No. 6023 – Glen Fergus This stud was founded and registered by Clyde Maguire and Richard Maguire in September 2024, trading as R. Maguire and K. Thompson, with the purchase of 30 stud ewes and two rams from Langdene, Poll F. No. 1546. Niela Poll Merino Poll F. No. 6024 – Laggan This stud was founded and registered in September 2024 by Tony McGaw, trading as A.D. and D.T. McGaw, with the purchase of five rams from Ridgeway Advanced Poll, Poll F. No 1307, and the transfer of 250 stud ewes, 100 ram lambs and 100 ewe lambs from Niela, F. No 5020. – 7 –
