TOP SIRE 2025–2026 NSW SHOW AND SALE RESULTS Hay Merino Sheep Show Saturday 14 June 2025 | Hay Showgrounds A drought was broken at the 73rd Hay Merino Sheep Show when Poll Boonoke claimed the coveted Riverina Wool Australia Champion Hogget Ram title. The award, which carries a $5000 cash prize, has not been won by a NSW stud for ten years when it was last won by Conargo-based Poll Boonoke in 2015. It was an emotional moment for staff when PB 240424 won the award as the ram was affectionately named Sefton in honour of the late Bob Sefton who recently passed. Bob spent 40 years working for F.S. Falkiner, retiring as general manager in 1997. Judging for the day was Philip Russell, Katanning, WA; David Zouch, Bigga, and Steve Phillips, Yarrawonga, Harden, who said the Poll Boonoke ram was “magnificent”. “It’s a magnificent line up of rams,” Steve said. “The Poll Boonoke is well shaped. He’s got beautiful wool and purity. He’s a very good sheep in today’s market.” Sired by PB 210231, Sefton weighed in at 118kg and carried a 20.7-micron wool. It recorded figures of 42.5mm for eye muscle depth and 7mm for fat depth. Sefton also won the NSW Best in State Hogget Ram award, while the McGauchie family, Terrick West, Prairie, won the Best in State award for VIC and the Lawrie family, Collandra North, Tumby Bay, won the award for SA. “There isn’t much between these two rams,” Steve said about the NSW and VIC exhibits. “The Terrick West has a great barrel and beautiful wool. The Collandra North ram has a beautiful skin and is very correct.” Collinsville, Hallett, SA, won the Nutrien Ag Solutions Champion Hogget Merino Ewe and also claimed both Grand Champion Ewe and Grand Champion Ram titles for the day. Their Poll Merino exhibit, Collinsville Imperial 69, was the eventual Supreme Champion, claiming the Bill Lamb Perpetual Trophy. In the flock section, the Schilg family, Piney Range, Walbundrie, claimed the Supreme Champion and Reserve Champion broad ribbons for best pen of five flock ewes. It is the sixth year in a row that the Schilg family has won the award. In the unhoused section, the Huggins family, Woodpark Poll, Hay, were awarded the Champion and Reserve Champion Unhoused Ewe ribbons as well as the prize for most successful exhibitor for the seventh time in eight years. The junior judging section of the show was well supported with 31 entrants. Rosie Mahony, Sydney, placed first in the senior section, with Angus Knox placing second and Ashlee Trebilco in third. In the under 15 years section, Sam Frost, Laggan, placed first, while Tash Lucas and Harvey Schilg placed second and third respectively.
