Each year the average marble score of our entire year drop of calves will sit at around the 15th percentile for the breed. In general terms marbling and growth traits are in inversely correlated: to breed for extremes in either of these traits is not difficult, but to have high marbling, with good growth capacity and carcase traits is more challenging. Over the last five years we have made a concerted effort to maintain a very high level of marbling, but also find bulls that can provide growth and carcase weight. The 2022 drop of bull calves are sitting exactly where we want them to be with an average marble score of the sale bulls at +1.9 (top 10% of the breed) and an average 200 day weight of +13 (top 35% of the breed) This process of delivering growth and marbling was expedited in 2017 when we discovered ‘Jack’ (TBRFJ0077) a sire that was producing high marble score carcases with a big EMA and a big carcase weight. He has become instrumental to our breeding program, and you will see his pedigree throughout the catalogue, particularly on the dam side. Beyond the use of genetic evaluation tools, we have a strong focus on the basics of phenotype and fertility. We breed easy doing cattle that perform in all conditions, Trent Bridge bulls have been sent to work across the country from Northern Queensland to Flinders Island off the coast of Tasmania.
