8 The Festival was an idea born from four community minded, horse passionate men who combined their vision to turn an annual country race meet into a major festival for everyone to enjoy. Dr William Howey OAM moved to Australia more than 50 years ago and has been an integral part of the equine community in the Upper Hunter including the Scone Race Club and the Scone Equine Hospital. He said the Festival sprung from the annual Scone Cup, a social phenomenon. “The first Scone Cup at the White Park track was held in 1947. It built up this incredible momentum and it’s grown into a not to be missed event. “During the week of the Cup we would hold a two-day sale at White Park that culminated in two days of racing with huge crowds. “It was before my time in Scone, but Jim Rodgers, Mike Pritchard, Barry Chapman & Brian Russell then came up with the larger Festival forming a volunteer committee that has nurtured and grown the Festival over the years.” Scone’s label as the ‘Horse Capital’ also grew from the formation of the Scone Equine Group. Dr Howey joined the Scone Equine Hospital when it was a small veterinary practice in 1967 working under Murray Bain. For his service to the practice and for his incredible contribution to veterinary science, Dr Howey was awarded one of the nation’s highest honours – a Medal of the Order of Australia. Dr Howey was also awarded the Warburton Estate Agents Scone Horse Festival VIP of the Year in the second year of the Festival. It’s an award given each year to someone who exemplifies the spirit of dedication and service within the equine community, and this year it went to Julee Gilmore. Julee is a founding member of the Upper Hunter Dressage Club, played a big role at the Scone Pony Club and has supported several community events over the years. Julee moved to Scone with her husband in 1983 and they’ve never looked back. “You’d go out to Moonan Flat for a competition, they had a family who had pony club out there. It was beautiful, you’d camp there for the weekend with the family. The friendships we made too, you just don’t get that in Sydney. Obviously, there’s things in Sydney you can’t do in the country but it’s just not the same.” The theme for the 2025 Warburton Estate Agents Scone Horse Festival is ‘Home is where the Horse is’. “It’s very relative to me, I’ve always been involved with horses, and it just showcases Scone and how we’ve been promoting Scone as the Horse Capital of Australia for all these years. I think it’s great,” explained Julee. CEO of Scone Race Club, and the 2025 Festival President Jason Hill, said the event is like nothing else. “Scone is a remarkable community filled with rich Australian equine history which has been celebrated throughout the Festival each year. “It is an integral part of the rich equine heritage of the Upper Hunter Valley. It is a highly regarded event which provides entertainment and competition, while delivering significant economic and social benefits to the region with around 10,000 people attending each year,” he said. The 2025 Warburton Estate Agents Scone Horse Festival is expected to be the best yet with the much-loved Scone Equine Hospital Horse Festival Parade set to showcase the finished upgrades of Scone’s main street. Mark your calendar for May 9 to 18, 2025 for 10 days of entertaining and exciting equine events! The Horse Capital of Australia will celebrate the return of the Warburton Estate Agents Scone Horse festival in May for the 45th iteration of the 10-day celebration of all things equine. 14 The conservation organisation sprang to life in 2011 as Devil Ark, starting with 44 “founder” Tasmanian Devils that kickstarted the breeding program to create an insurance population of the species free from the deadly Devil Facial Tumour Disease that has decimated the species in Tasmania. The facility expanded in 2017 and transitioned to what is now known as Aussie Ark. The Ark works in tandem with the Conservation Ark facility on the Central Coast and between them 20 endangered species are now cared for. Operations Manager Dean Reid said Aussie Ark has “exploded with wildlife” over the past few years with about 500 animals born in the Species Recovery Unit alone. “Off the back of the success of the Devil breeding program, we started to think about what other animals we could breed that fit into our ethos. “We started to breed small macropods; the Rufous Bettong, Long-Nosed Potoroo and the Parma Wallaby as their numbers are declining in the wild due to cats and foxes. “Then we thought we could do more, so we applied for a grant from Australian Geographic to build our Eastern Quoll enclosures. “We thought, ‘why stop there’ and built enclosures for Brush-Tailed Rock-Wallabies. It was a huge project that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars as we had to bring a lot of big rocks in to create their habitat.” The team didn’t stop there, enclosing 400 hectares of land for their Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary. All the feral animals were cleared out and 13 kilometres of fencing installed. At their last count there were 150 Bettongs, 50 Parma Wallabies, 150 Potoroos and about 50 Devils out in the Sanctuary. Eastern Quolls are also allowed to be released once they are over 3 years old. “It’s an experiment to get the area back to the ecological function it had pre-settlement and be self-sustaining,” Dean explained. “Those healthy insurance populations are also important as robust gene pools, to provide animals to other sanctuaries nationwide.” Over the years Aussie Ark has expanded its capabilities to allow the public to drive up and see the incredible work they’re doing. You can head up and see Aussie Ark in action by taking a “Devils in the Wild Tour”. The guided tours are held throughout the year a couple of times a month and take you through the everyday running of the facility. You’ll see where the animals live, how the breeding programs work and get up close and personal with some of Australia’s rarest and most iconic animals. If the Barrington is a little far for a day trip you can make a holiday out of it by staying at “Quolls Cottage” or “Devil’s Retreat”. Dean said what they’re doing at Aussie Ark is incredibly important and they want to share their work with as many people as possible. “The animals we’re protecting are crucial to the environment, they all have individual roles to play in the ecosystem. “We have a long way to go to save animals like the Devil from extinction, but what we are doing is having a huge impact, it’s an incredible thing to be a part of.” OF BARRINGTON The Heart Tucked away in a corner of the beautiful Barrington Tops is Aussie Ark, a conservation organisation managing insurance populations of some of the world’s most threatened species. Nestled on just over 2000 hectares of land, Aussie Ark has bred hundreds of animals since its inception over a decade ago and you can go see their work and the animals for yourself. If you can, please donate today to help Aussie Ark continue its vital work. Also book tours and accommodation. aussieark.org.au Images courtesy of Aussie Ark

15 NATIONAL PARKS OF THE UPPER HUNTER BURNING MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE Burning Mountain Nature Reserve contains a 6000-year-old, naturally occurring underground burning coal seam. Signposted with information panels, a guided walking track leads from the council car park through previously burnt areas to a viewing platform where the ever-burning coal seam and exhaust vents can be seen. The 4.5km return walk is located 20km north of Scone and takes around 90 minutes to complete. TOWARRI NATIONAL PARK Just a 20-minute drive from Scone, Towarri National Park and Wingen Maid Nature Reserve are a bird-watchers delight. Yellow-Tufted Honeyeaters, Kingfishers, and Glossy Black Cockatoos are just some of the species to be found. At the Washpools Camping and Picnic Areas on the bank of Middle Brook, travellers can cool off in the culturally significant water hole or hike over the Liverpool Range. As you drive to the park, look for the Wingen Maid protruding from the sandstone cliffs. GOULBURN RIVER NATIONAL PARK Goulburn River National Park is located west of Muswellbrook, south of Merriwa and east of Mudgee. The Goulburn River meanders between rugged sandstone cliffs honeycombed with caves, while wide sandy riverbanks offer easy walking trails. Kangaroos, wombats, emus, red-neck wallabies, turquoise parrots and wedge-tailed eagles are among the multitude of native wildlife you might see. There are also plenty of activities, including camping or picnicking at Spring Gully or Big River, and walking trails such as Lees Pinch Lookout. Walk along the Goulburn River and stand under The Drip on a hot day or check out the Aboriginal rock art at Hands on Rock. You can also take a dip in the swimming holes or bring your canoe for a paddle on the river. WOLLEMI NATIONAL PARK New South Wales’ largest wilderness area, Wollemi National Park is a spectacular maze of deep canyons, rocky cliffs, and undisturbed forest. Access Wollemi via Bulga and the Putty Road, or via Denman through Baerami. The park is home to a rich variety of species, including eastern grey kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, gliders, geckos and snakes. View its breathtaking scenery of sandstone ridges and escarpments from the road along the Bylong Valley Way and the Widden Valley. Stop for a roadside break at the Phipps Cutting or Honeysuckle Creek picnic areas. Reconnect with nature.

16 NATIONAL PARKS OF THE UPPER HUNTER BARRINGTON TOPS NATIONAL PARK Reconnect with nature. The World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park lies between Scone, Dungog and Gloucester. The Upper Hunter provides a western gateway into the park from Scone. Over 390 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects can be found in this wonderful wilderness area. Enjoy the scenic drive along Barrington Tops Forrest Road and stop off at any of the lookouts for fantastic views over the Hunter Valley. The Barrington Tops plateau has a host of facilities, including numerous picnic areas and short walks for day travellers. Camping facilities are available at Polblue, Devil’s Hole, Gummi Falls and Manning River. A range of longer hiking trails exist throughout the park and the majestic snow-covered ranges of the Barrington Tops are a must-see in winter. With a highest peak of 1586m above sea level, snow may be possible at any time of the year but is more likely to occur in the colder months of May and June. The best spots to experience the snow are at the higher elevations on the plateau, accessible by vehicle on the Barrington Tops Forest Road. The main access road is steep and unsealed and can become very slippery in ice or snow. 4WD vehicles with good tyres and high ground clearance are better suited to the hazardous conditions, however the road may be closed to all vehicles at short notice to ensure the safety of visitors. To increase your chances of finding settled snow on the ground, check with the Bureau of Meteorology’s (BoM) weather forecast before you go or visit the Barrington Tops Snow Chasers page on Facebook for the latest updates. Weather conditions at Barrington Tops can change very quickly, so always be prepared. As a minimum take spare warm, dry clothing, blankets, food and water.

20 AWARD-WINNING CHEF CALLS THE UPPER HUNTER HOME Built in the 1860s, 196 Kelly Street in Scone has been home to everything from a private hospital to a guest house. But for the last ten years it has been home to The Cottage, an award-winning modern Australian restaurant with all the country charms you would expect. The building was lovingly restored by Sydney businessman Michael Crouch and his wife Shanny. They kept the original features intact, revitalizing them to create a beautiful open space that kept the history of the building alive. With construction well and truly underway, next was finding a fantastic Head Chef. Enter Colin Selwood. Colin started his career across the ditch in Christchurch, and came to Australia with all intentions of it being merely a stepping stone to greater things in Europe. But, after working in some of Sydney’s best restaurants, with some of the Australia’s best chefs, Colin made the move to the Upper Hunter making a name for himself at Graze at the Willow Tree Inn. “After spending some time there, I moved to Melbourne with my family, but the Upper Hunter kept calling. “A friend of mine knew the Crouch family, and Michael asked me to come up and check out his new business venture. I flew up and the building was still under construction. “But I was hooked. I moved up to set it up and start the restaurant and then the family moved up and the rest is history!” The Cottage has become Colin’s life work. He firmly believes what he has created in Scone is a culmination of his career’s work. “To find your own uniqueness today is hard. I try to put good wholesome food on the plate, dishes that aren’t too complicated and have texture and flavour, and a contrast between those two. “I describe our food as, not minimalistic, but think of the way food was in the 90s. A piece of protein with a garnish or accompaniment, a sauce and that was it. What we do is French Bistro style, combined with English pub food from the 90s. “Most of all, I put love into everything I do.” Colin especially has a deep-rooted love for meat. He fell in love with cooking it while he was in Sydney and Graze at the Willow Tree Inn was renowned for its steak. The Cottage has a purpose-built dry aging room, with some of the best meat from right across our region sourced through Manning Valley Naturally. “If I was going to my own restaurant, I would order a steak! Although come winter time I love wet dishes like a braise. I love big, hearty, wholesome punch-you-in-themouth type flavours. “For me, cooking is moods and the season creates the mood.” The menu at The Cottage is varied with something for everyone. From oysters Kilpatrick to start, gin cured ocean trout, tzatziki and salmon pearls or the classic duck spring roll to the pan roasted venison or any number of steaks including the Chateaubriand. The desserts are classic, Colin wouldn’t have it any other way. “There are a lot of chefs out there who want to create something with their spin on it. For me, if I’m making a Crème Brulé it is just that a Crème Brulé. No weird flavour, no flowers, it’s just a perfect Crème Brulé. “It’s simple things, and I try to do them well.” The Cottage is wonderfully cozy, especially in winter when the fireplace is lit and Colin creates some of his favourite, hearty dishes. The Cottage offers breakfast Tuesday to Saturday and lunch and dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday and is fully licensed.

For more than 30 years, the festival, has become a staple in the community, drawing together locals and visitors to revel in the region’s proud farming traditions. The event typically takes place in June, marking the beginning of winter, when the sheep are freshly shorn, and the wool is at its finest. 34 FARM STAY A Unique In 2022, Kitchwin Hills co-founder and director Steve Brown partnered with Libby and Jarrod Bowditch to open the gates of the horse stud and share the beautiful property with the public by offering a unique Thoroughbred farm stay experience. “The Barn Scone” was born, designed by Sydney architect Ben Shaw of the Brompton Group in conjunction with interior designer Libby Bowditch, it was built by Upper Hunter Valley legend Steve Tilse of Tilse Building with assistance from Brad Wall of Wallbuilt Residential. Manager of The Barn Mariah Rawson said horse studs have always been quite exclusive, so it’s wonderful to be able to welcome the public to stay. “It’s always been exclusive, unless you know someone or are a client of a stud, you never really get the experience of going on a Thoroughbred horse stud, so this way you can stay for a mid-week or weekend getaway, go on a stud tour and see the stallions and when it’s fouling season you can see all of the gorgeous fouls. “The Barn Scone was mentioned in the “Top 25 Australian Escapes in 2023” by the Australian Financial Review and we have amazing reviews and coverage. “As soon as you get out here to The Barn Scone you forget there are people around you. It’s so secluded looking out over the Valley and the horses, it’s amazing. “It can sleep a maximum of 14 people. It’s spread over three bedrooms; we’ve got a King bed and two Queen beds and a bunk room that can sleep eight. It has large, high-pitched ceilings with a deck and a pool that looks out over the stud and the Valley.” There’s a large kitchen (with two dishwashers), living room and rumpus room, a mud room, internal gas fire, outdoor fireplace, Starlink Wi-Fi, a large outdoor deck area with Sonos sound systems, an eight-set outdoor suite and table, a gas barbecue and a swimming pool that overlooks the beautiful Kitchwin Hills. The accommodation is all self-catered but everything else is provided. Mariah said the accommodation is the perfect accompaniment to everything the Upper Hunter’s other attractions. “We want to showcase everything the region has to offer. I don’t think many people realise just how much there is to do in the Upper Hunter. “If you are interested in the horse industry, and even if you aren’t, there’s so much to do. You have the polo fields, horse studs, Scone Race Club, you can drive to Ellerston, Gundy is renowned for its mountain bike and walking trails, we’ve also partnered up with the Linga Longa pub who will run their courtesy bus out to The Barn Scone and pick you up and take you to do dinner and home again. “We’re just doing tours of Kitchwin Hills for now, but we have approached Craig Benjamin from “Upper Hunter Valley Tours” who is doing the thoroughbred tours about picking people up from The Barn Scone and heading out to see other horse studs. “There is so much to do in the Upper Hunter. It’s so important we work with everyone in the region so we can offer something for everyone,” said Mariah. www.thebarnscone.com.au Among the rolling hills and limestone enriched pastures of the Isis Valley lies Kitchwin Hills Stud. The horse stud was originally purchased by Ray and Di Brown in 1993 and has been home to multiple Group 1 winners, stakes horses, and group winners of prestigious races including the Melbourne Cup, The Everest, Magic Million 2YO and 3YO races and many more.
