3 TOWNS AND VILLAGES OF THE UPPER HUNTER MURRURUNDI Lying just north of Scone and an hour south of Tamworth, Murrurundi boasts natural beauty, rich farmland and loads of character. Murrurundi is an art lover’s paradise. Resident artists, galleries and frequent workshops add to the allure of Murrurundi, a haven for artists and creatives escaping frenetic city life. Explore the unique rock formation of the ‘Eye of the Needle’, an unusual walkaway leading to a lookout that offers captivating views over the township. The ‘King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge’ and Bush Festival are held over three days in September. The Challenge showcases Australia’s top stockmen and women competing in whip cracking, packhorse, bareback obstacle, cross country riding, shoeing, and stock handling. SCONE Scone is located two hours north of Newcastle on the New England Highway. Renowned as the Horse Capital of Australia, the town is surrounded by magnificent, world-renowned thoroughbred horse studs. The ‘Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival’ is held in May each year and begins with a street parade followed by two weeks of fetes, thoroughbred sales, art shows, rodeos, country fairs, family fun days, and camp drafts, before concluding with the Scone Cup Race carnival. Scone is also home of the Australian Stock Horse Museum and White Park, a multi-disciplinary undercover equine arena that spans 80 x 40 metres and seats up to 2864 spectators. Surrounded by lush bushland, State and National parks, Scone is also the gateway to the rugged wilderness of the Barrington Tops. WINGEN Wingen is a little village halfway between Murrurundi and Scone on the New England Highway. Close by is the opportunity to experience the phenomenon of the Burning Mountain, where a two metrethick coal seam is burning around 2030 metres below the surface. A great spot for picnics, Burning Mountain is a nature reserve and visitors can enjoy a 45-minute walk through the bush to its summit where there is a good view of one of the outlets. GUNDY & MOONAN FLAT Gundy is a scenic 15 minutes from Scone, driving through some of the Upper Hunter’s most picturesque countryside and passing several of Australia’s leading horse studs. This tiny settlement on the beautiful Pages River is home to the historic Linga Longa Inn. One of Australia’s most famous rural properties, Belltrees is another 17 kilometres east. Moonan Flat is a charming village 20 minutes up the road from Gundy on the way to Barrington Tops. Stop, relax and experience history at the Victory Hotel. A stopover for today’s travellers, in bygone days it was a colourful meeting place for bushrangers, gold miners, shearers and horse-drawn coach travellers. SANDY HOLLOW The dramatic sandstone hills of ‘Giants Leap’ overshadow this quite township, which borders the Wollemi National Park between Denman and Merriwa. Located on the junction of the Golden Highway and the Bylong Valley Way, Sandy Hollow is a great place to stop at the roadside reserve, the pub or the local café/emporium to take in this little town’s country hospitality and natural beauty. “HOME OF THE AUSTRALIAN STOCK HORSE MUSEUM AND WHITE PARK”
4 MUSWELLBROOK Muswellbrook is located 90 minutes from Newcastle in the heart of the Upper Hunter, making it an ideal base from which to explore the region. Steeped in history, you’ll discover historic buildings, grand country homes and Jacaranda-lined streets. Muswellbrook is a powerhouse of new energy projects, mining and agriculture. The town has also developed a reputation for producing award-winning wine, olives, and delicious cheeses that can be enjoyed at local restaurants and at the farm gate. Every two years in September, Muswellbrook hosts the ‘The Great Cattle Dog Muster’. A celebration of the Australian Cattle Dog’s origins in the Upper Hunter, the event draws visitors from throughout the region, across Australia, and overseas. Muswellbrook also boasts the Upper Hunter’s Regional Arts Centre, home to the Max Waters Collection and the prestigious Muswellbrook Art Prize. ABERDEEN Located on the New England Highway, midway between Muswellbrook and Scone, Aberdeen was among the first settlements in the Upper Hunter. Established more than 180 years ago, Aberdeen is steeped in its Scottish heritage, taking its name from the Earl of Aberdeen, a friend of early settler and former British MP Thomas Macqueen. The annual ‘Aberdeen Highland Games’ are held each year on the first weekend in July and sees a colourful gathering of Scottish clans, pipe bands, highland dancers, heavylifting event competitors, as well as state and interstate tug-of-war teams come together to celebrate the Upper Hunter’s Scottish and Celtic history. Just a few kilometres east of Aberdeen, Lake Glenbawn is very popular for camping, boating, skiing and other water activities and boasts an abundance of fish, including Bass, Golden Perch, Murry Cod and Trout. MERRIWA Situated midway between Dubbo and Newcastle on the Golden Highway, Merriwa is favourite stopover for travellers heading to Mudgee, Dunedoo or Dubbo in the west, or to Willow Tree in the north. Settled in 1839, Merriwa is a flourishing agriculture centre that celebrates its rich agricultural history with the Merriwa Springtime Show in September and the Festival of the Fleeces on the June long weekend (don’t miss the ‘Running of the Sheep’ – resplendent in their red socks!). Built in the town centre in 1847, the Old Colonial Cottage houses the Merriwa Historical Society and Museum. CASSILIS West of Merriwa on the Golden Highway is the heritage-listed town of Cassilis. Settled in the 1830’s, Cassilis then covered a large area and was the base for the local police district and part of the Dalkeith Station. The township has plenty of country charm and is rich in agriculture. In September the region is covered by fields of Canola. DENMAN Nestled amid vineyards, horse studs, and olive groves, Denman is the Upper Hunter’s epicentre for local wine and produce. Delight your senses and sample some of Australia’s most award-winning wines – all grown and produced in the heart of the Upper Hunter. 8 Country music fans from across the Hunter and beyond are preparing to descend on Muswellbrook for one of the region’s biggest new festivals, with the 2026 Going Country event set to take over the Muswellbrook Showground on Saturday, 17 October. The all-day celebration of country music and rural culture promises a vibrant mix of live entertainment, family attractions, food, markets and authentic country experiences, creating what organisers describe as a true “country vibe and festival feel.” The event is being presented by the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce and Industry and is expected to attract visitors from across regional New South Wales. Held at the Muswellbrook Showground, the festival will run from 3pm until 10pm, with gates opening shortly before the action begins. Organisers say the event is designed to celebrate the spirit of country Australia while also showcasing the Upper Hunter region and its strong community culture. A major highlight of Going Country 2026 will be its impressive live music lineup, featuring a mix of emerging and established Australian country artists. Acts announced include The Wet Whistles, Katie Jayne, Nathan Lamont, The Collective and Saralyn. Television personality and entertainer Farmer Dave will serve as MC for the festival. Beyond the main stage, festivalgoers can expect a packed program of country-themed attractions and activities. The popular Show N Shine Going Country Ute Muster will offer more than $5,000 in prize money, while visitors can also test their skills on the mechanical bull, take part in line dancing, enjoy the bungee run and experience the “Outback Thunda” monster truck ride. The evening will conclude with a fireworks spectacular lighting up the Upper Hunter sky. Families are expected to make up a large portion of the crowd, with organisers promoting the event as a fun and welcoming experience for all ages. Food trucks, entertainment zones and exhibits celebrating country living will be spread across the showground throughout the day and evening. Tourism operators believe Going Country will provide a valuable economic boost for the region, with accommodation providers, cafés, pubs and local businesses expected to benefit from the influx of visitors. Destination marketing bodies have described the festival as an important addition to the Upper Hunter events calendar and a strong showcase for the Muswellbrook region. 14 Tucked quietly along the Golden Highway, the small village of Cassilis offers a glimpse into a slower, more grounded way of life in the heart of the Upper Hunter. With a population of just a few hundred, Cassilis is not a place you stumble upon by accident—it’s a destination for those seeking history, character, and a deep connection to rural Australia. Founded in the early-1800s with a local land grant to the Busby family, Cassilis grew as the gateway to Western NSW with the District Lands Office located in town. Historic buildings, comprising old sandstone buildings which include the courthouse, St Columbia church, Royal Hotel and the heritage-listed police station, stand as proud reminders of a bustling past. Today, agriculture underpins the local economy, with cattle and sheep grazing across rolling hills and crop farming in the fertile valleys. Nearby, the striking wilderness of the Coolah Tops National Park provides a dramatic contrast, drawing visitors with its volcanic formations and renowned stargazing opportunities. Despite its size, Cassilis has a strong sense of community spirit. Holding occasions at the local hall, agricultural events such as the annual rodeo, team penning, campdraft, dog trialling and pony club, and informal gatherings keep residents connected. Erika’s Bread Bar, is open for lunch on Thursdays from 8am to 1pm and Friday and Saturday 8am to11am, is another favourite for locals and visitors alike. Cassilis music weekend is held the long weekend in October at the Cassilis Bowling Club and the Cassilis War Memorial Park. Biannually the Cassilis Spring ball alternates with the Long Lunch which are both held in the spring months. In March each year the town also hosts the Giro de Cassilis weekend of gravel bike riding so visitors can experience the magnificent countryside. Cassilis appeals to those looking to disconnect from the pace of modern life. Mobile reception can be patchy, and that’s part of the charm. Here, the focus shifts to simple pleasures—watching a sunset over the hills, enjoying the quiet hum of the countryside, or striking up a conversation with a friendly local. 15 BURNING MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE Burning Mountain Nature Reserve contains a 6000-year-old, naturally occurring underground burning coal seam. Signposted with information panels, a guided walking track leads from the council car park through previously burnt areas to a viewing platform where the ever-burning coal seam and exhaust vents can be seen. The 4.5km return walk is located 20km north of Scone and takes around 90 minutes to complete. TOWARRI NATIONAL PARK Just a 20-minute drive from Scone, Towarri National Park and Wingen Maid Nature Reserve are a birdwatchers delight. Yellow-Tufted Honeyeaters, Kingfishers, and Glossy Black Cockatoos are just some of the species to be found. At the Washpools Camping and Picnic Areas on the bank of Middle Brook, travellers can cool off in the culturally significant water hole or hike over the Liverpool Range. As you drive to the park, look for the Wingen Maid protruding from the sandstone cliffs. GOULBURN RIVER NATIONAL PARK Goulburn River National Park is located west of Muswellbrook, south of Merriwa and east of Mudgee. The Goulburn River meanders between rugged sandstone cliffs honeycombed with caves, while wide sandy riverbanks offer easy walking trails. Kangaroos, wombats, emus, red-neck wallabies, turquoise parrots and wedge-tailed eagles are among the multitude of native wildlife you might see. There are also plenty of activities, including camping or picnicking at Spring Gully or Big River, and walking trails such as Lees Pinch Lookout. Walk along the Goulburn River and stand under The Drip on a hot day or check out the Aboriginal rock art at Hands on Rock. You can also take a dip in the swimming holes or bring your canoe for a paddle on the river. WOLLEMI NATIONAL PARK New South Wales’ largest wilderness area, Wollemi National Park is a spectacular maze of deep canyons, rocky cliffs, and undisturbed forest. Access Wollemi via Bulga and the Putty Road, or via Denman through Baerami. The park is home to a rich variety of species, including eastern grey kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, gliders, geckos and snakes. View its breathtaking scenery of sandstone ridges and escarpments from the road along the Bylong Valley Way and the Widden Valley. 16 BARRINGTON TOPS NATIONAL PARK The World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park lies between Scone, Dungog and Gloucester. The Upper Hunter provides a western gateway into the park from Scone. Over 390 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects can be found in this wonderful wilderness area. Enjoy the scenic drive along Barrington Tops Forrest Road and stop off at any of the lookouts for fantastic views over the Hunter Valley. The Barrington Tops plateau has a host of facilities, including numerous picnic areas and short walks for day travellers. Camping facilities are available at Polblue, Devil’s Hole, Gummi Falls and Manning River. A range of longer hiking trails exist throughout the park and the majestic snow-covered ranges of the Barrington Tops are a must-see in winter. With a highest peak of 1586m above sea level, snow may be possible at any time of the year but is more likely to occur in the colder months of May and June. The best spots to experience the snow are at the higher elevations on the plateau, accessible by vehicle on the Barrington Tops Forest Road. The main access road is steep and unsealed and can become very slippery in ice or snow. 4WD vehicles with good tyres and high ground clearance are better suited to the hazardous conditions, however the road may be closed to all vehicles at short notice to ensure the safety of visitors. To increase your chances of finding settled snow on the ground, check with the Bureau of Meteorology’s (BoM) weather forecast before you go or visit the Barrington Tops Snow Chasers page on Facebook for the latest updates. Weather conditions at Barrington Tops can change very quickly, so always be prepared. As a minimum take spare warm, dry clothing, blankets, food and water. Reconnect with nature. 28 Driving along the Scone Bypass heading up the Valley you will look to your right and see the huge White Park Equine Complex in the Horse Capital of Australia. From Professional Bull Riders (PBR) events to local competitions, school events and the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza, the complex is growing its reputation as one of regional Australia’s premier equine, livestock, and large event facilities. White Park is named after the local farming family who donated the arena to the town in 1924. Mr Alf G White of Belltrees saw the local council at the time was struggling to get together the funds to purchase the grounds so stepped in, gifting the arena to the town and its people. Since then, White Park has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors through its gates for countless events showcasing the agricultural and farming communities of Australia. The versatility of the venue is unmatched, with the recent extension of the main undercover arena roof to now include the rodeo chutes and cattle yards, making a significant difference to the usability of the facility. The venue boasts grandstand seating on three sides of the covered arena, a campdraft arena, warm-up arena, rodeo chutes, cattle yards, 66 powered camp sites, 200 unpowered sites, amenities, surface preparation to suit any event, stables, and large open grassed flat areas. Anna Brennan, Business Services at Upper Hunter Shire Council, said the venue attracts some amazing events. “The bigger the venue gets, the bigger the events get and we’re adding more to the calendar each year. Last year for the first time we hosted Australia’s Greatest Horseman, which showcased Australia’s best western performance horses. “We also hosted the Australian Professional Rodeo Association for the first time last year and they’re back again in 2026, so events are seeing the value in using our facilities, and the spectators do too,” she said. The PBR stopped in at Scone again in February, attracting more than 5000 spectators. Australia’s largest youth livestock event, the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza, returns in October bringing more than 5000 people as well. White Park also recently hosted the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) National Finals and the Australian Reined Cow Horse Association (ARCHA) Futurity and Derby Show and continues to attract major national equine events, with another NCHA event scheduled for August. Whether it’s a rodeo surface that’s needed, a surface for a farrier competition, breakaway roping, cutting, or facilitating events for local schools or organisations, the arena offers everything to create the perfect conditions. And don’t forget the large, grassed area that can host your dressage, showing, jumping or field day events. 34 Annie and her husband Richard Bell run Belford Park which has been owned and operated as a beef grazing property by their family since 1979. On the property lies Cherson Cottage which dates back to 1920, with Coquun the older of the two built in 1912. Both were once upon a time used as stockman and workman cottages until Annie decided it was time for a change. The last workman left Cherson Cottage in 2011, Annie and Richard saw an opportunity to create something special where guests could slow down, reconnect, and experience the beauty of farm life. “It’s been incredibly rewarding, I love being able to give people a place that feels peaceful, open and quiet where all you hear are birds and cows. “I wanted to share where we live and go that little bit further and provide a luxury escape. We provide a breakfast hamper, put fresh flowers in the bedrooms, and in winter we make sure the fire is going. Those little touches don’t take long and make a world of difference. “I bake a fresh slice and leave them in the cottage, you walk in and instantly feel at home,” Annie said. Cherson is a spacious four-bedroom cottage that can accommodate up to eight guests with everything you need for a country escape from the river view to both an indoor and outdoor fireplace, luxury linen bedding and robes, kitchen and workspace. Cherson is booked per room, so if you have less than eight guests the rate is adjusted. Coquun Cottage is the smaller, more luxurious and intimate of the two. With two bedrooms, the main opening out onto the garden through beautiful French doors, it has underfloor heating, soft 100% cotton towels and robes, a fully equipped kitchen and beautiful indoor and outdoor fireplaces. The name “Coquun”, meaning ‘fresh water’ comes from one of the original Aboriginal names for the Hunter River, reflecting the property’s deep connection to the local landscape and history, looking out onto the beautiful river and working farm. “Everyone who comes here loves it, the chance to disconnect from busy lives and reconnect with family and nature. I’ve had families message me and ask if the Wi-Fi can be switch off so they can spend quality time with their kids, I have one family who has been coming here every year since we opened nearly ten years ago, it’s their dream. “I remember one guest loved hearing the gauze door bang shut because it reminded her of visits to her grandparents’ farm as a child. 39 Usually when people hear the sound of scurrying feet they reach for the mouse trap, but for one Upper Hunter locality it is the beginning of another great day. Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Upper Hunter lies the sleepy community of Wybong. Just 25 minutes from Muswellbrook and Denman, the area is home to a rich history of generational farming of horse studs, lucerne farms and grazing properties. Surrounded by glorious mountain ranges and the Wybong Creek running through the valley, this location flies under the radar as a tourist spot – except for the last Saturday in March when the area comes alive to the cheers and chaos that is Mouse Racing. Heading for their 3rd year in 2027, the Wybong Committee has worked tirelessly to create a fun filled and entertaining day for young and old. After a successful inaugural event in 2025, plans were put on hold when, on November 24, the beloved century old hall was lost to fire. Devastating as this was, the committee, along with the support of the community, rallied to ensure that the Mouse Races in 2026 was another outstanding success and that it will continue to grow to become a memorable event for every calendar each year. A BIT ABOUT THE RACES. The mice run on a purpose-built track with each mouse having its own lane. People can purchase a purpose bred racing mouse prior to the day with the ‘owner’ able to name the mouse as well as give it a little ‘form’ to put in the race book, the funnier the better. There have been some hilarious names which always gives the public a laugh when the race caller is calling the race. The winning owner of each of the 10 sponsored races receives a trophy and sash with winning mice then going on to compete for the prestigious Wybong Cup. Several companies have sponsored races both years and their support has been greatly appreciated and each year it has been a race to get a spot as a sponsor as the races’ popularity grows. Bar facilities are on hand along with delicious food served by the Wybong Catering Crew and other food vendors supported by a large range of market stalls, children’s entertainment, live music with mouse race merchandise, raffle and chocolate wheel tickets for sale. Fashions-In-The-Field was run for the first time in 2026 with some very creative combinations vying for great prizes. The thrill of racing mice following on from the Muswellbrook Cup Race meeting on the Friday before over the last two years has created a unique opportunity for visitors to come and enjoy two great days of racing and then wind down on the Sunday with a visit to one of the many cafes or wineries or just soak up the beautiful scenery of the area. Camping, in a limited capacity, is available for those who wish to make a weekend of it and with Easter being the same weekend in 2027, it is planned to make it an even bigger event over the weekend.
