These efforts have deepened WAMS’ commitment to being more than a healthcare provider “We are a place where culture is lived, shared, and celebrated every day”. Through meaningful partnerships, education, and deep community engagement, the Culture and History Coordinator has strengthened the cultural foundations of WAMS and contributed to a growing sense of healing, pride, and connection. This report highlights the significant milestones and community-driven achievements since the role’s commencement, showcasing how culture continues to thrive and guide our collective path forward. Community Collaboration and Events Contributions to local planning meetings for NAIDOC Week and National Reconciliation week celebrations ensured community voices were central in shaping activities that honoured culture and history. During Reconciliation Week, WAMS partnered with Mission Australia to host a community morning tea an inclusive and reflective gathering that deepened partnerships and promoted mutual respect. Cultural Tours and Education The Freedom Ride Memorial Park has been a cornerstone of cultural activity, especially during the 60-year anniversary of the historic Freedom Ride. The coordinator has supported ongoing design and gardening efforts while also leading cultural awareness tours of the park for schools, universities, police, and other community groups. These guided visits provided powerful education about the significance of the park and the broader struggle for Aboriginal rights. Orientation and Staff Support A Cultural Orientation Program was developed to introduce new WAMS staff to the cultural landscape of Walgett. This program ensures that every team member begins their journey with a grounded understanding of the community, expectations around cultural respect, and the historical context in which we work. To date the Culture and History Coordinator has inducted 15 staff members across the organisation. Language and Identity WAMS ensures our ongoing commitment in honouring Aboriginal languages. This is paramount for our identity and the services we provide. This is demonstrated in everything we do from our uniforms, letterhead, wayfinding signage, programs and local language translation. Celebrating Culture Together WAMS proudly hosted an All-Staff Cultural Day and a vibrant Harmony Day celebration. These events created valuable space for cultural learning, team building, and celebration reinforcing WAMS as not just a place of work, but a culturally safe and connected space for all.
