28 | WATERLINE July 2025 The Marina Industries Association (MIA) has again commissioned Michigan State University (MSU) to conduct the biennial Health of the Marina Industry Survey (HAMIS). The 2025 study will be the 7th for the Australian industry and the 2nd for New Zealand. This important industry research produces valid and reliable data on the value of the marina sector, its’ contributions to employment, the economy and the ancillary benefits that flow from it. “Data such as this is critical to the MIA and other marine associations when advocating and representing industry to governments to seek favourable industry outcomes, and to marina owners and operators when liaising with local authorities around the benefits of their potential developments for the local economy and community”, said MIA CEO, Suzanne Davies. Responding to research requests isn’t about helping your association or the researchers. Responding will help your industry thrive, it will help your business improve and may assist in better conditions and controls. We live in an age where knowledge and data is essential in decision making and influencing policy makers and accurate, reliable and credible research is critical for industry association to advocate on behalf of industry. In 2023 the 40% response rate to the Australian survey was below our prior average of 46%. The lower response meant that our researchers were unable to confidently produce the representative state reports that had previously been provided. The MIA is routinely asked for information from members and governments about our industry, but without the participation of industry in the collection of data it is impossible to confidently and clearly respond. Below is the summary of the full 2023 Australian Report, similar was produced for New Zealand. Industry is urged to move beyond passive consumption towards active collaboration to help the MIA help industry and your business. The survey will be in field in August and all are encouraged to participate. The survey inputs go directly to the MSU researchers, no data is shared beyond the university researchers involved in the project. Results are only provided to the MIA in aggregated form and there has never been a breach of data confidentiality. All participants receive a copy of the complete report at no charge. Non- participants can purchase the report for $3,000 ex GST.
