11 WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? How to use this study guide Step 1. Reading the Scripture Each study begins with a Scripture reading, which you are encouraged to read together as a group. After the reading, before moving on to the Reflection, take a few moments individually to record or remember your initial response to the text. Step 2. Reflect Have one of your group read aloud the ‘Reflect’ section (or share the reading around the group). This is designed to help you understand the scripture passage contextually, highlighting possible meaning and understanding for you as readers. Feel free to question any of this, see what it sparks in you and ask questions of each other about any ideas raised. Step 3. Question The questions are always starting points and every person or group will take them in different ways. That’s good! If they’re helpful, then go with them. If not, make up your own. Be sure to make space for each person to speak if they wish. Beware of the temptation to dominate a group, as it’s rarely, if ever, fruitful. Step 4. The Marks of Mission The Marks of Mission are ways in which the church lives out the call of the Gospel. Reflect on this week’s ‘mark’ and read more about the Marks of Mission on page 9. Step 5. A Closer Reading This section is designed to allow you to go deeper into the text, understanding it with greater theological and historical depth. You may wish to read this section in parts, sharing the reading and stopping to discuss what is being said. Remember, as always, that you don’t have to agree with everything that has been written. Encountering difficult ideas can lead to epiphanies and frustration in equal measure. That’s how we learn, that’s how the early church learnt! One person in your group may be enraptured while you’re bewildered. Talk about it. Be bold.
