32 Question FourthMark of Mission Challenge violence, injustice and oppression, and, work for peace and reconciliation A Close Reading This story in Acts contains two well-known statements that are oft-quoted approvingly, one each from the two main protagonists: Paul says: “We must obey God rather than any human authority”. Gamaliel says: “If this plan or this undertaking is of human origin, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them”. With Paul we have the bold notion that God must be obeyed, irrespective of what any human authority requires, and with Gamaliel we have the equally bold notion that if God is behind an action, then it is unstoppable. But it doesn’t take much reflection to realise that there are in fact issues with both assertions, issues that have played out across the centuries up into the present. How does your church pursue justice both in Australia and outside? Are Christians really called to be peacemakers or is that asking too much?
