We generally believe that we ‘know’ the right thing to do. Often, it is only when we are dislocated through travel or circumstance – as Peter was when asked to visit Cornelius in Ceaserea – that we have to re-examine our cultural models and question what we have always seen as ‘right and good’. People groups have cultures, families have cultures, schools and workplaces have cultures. It is entirely possible to find that we are engaged with vastly different cultures at home and at work. That means we’re all living cross-culturally. Every person involved in cross-cultural mission, be that in another country or within our own community, is challenged – as Peter was. We are challenged to examine ourselves and our dominant culture and to practice the humility necessary to understand and learn and discover the gifts of the host culture. The solid ground of genuine Christian community is the willingness to pray, listen to and learn about those we consider as ‘different’, finding ways to welcome and be welcomed into the family of God. 3.
