Only progress onto this diet if you have tolerated the puree diet well. Your stomach is still healing so continue to eat slowly, take your time and stop when feeling satisfied. You can only tolerate up to 1/2 cup of very soft food and therefore protein is still the main priority at this stage. Most importantly you need to chew your food well. A soft diet may include any foods that can be mashed or chewed well into a puree consistency. Best options are foods that are moist such as casseroles and stews. Remember to: • Avoid all hard and dry solids – hard and dry foods are not suitable choices as they could get stuck • Only include soft textured food. • Focus on your protein sources (see the protein table) • Do not include starches and grains such as rice, bread, pasta and potato at this stage • Eat slowly – take 30 min at each meal • Chew your food well • Have small mouthfuls • Stop when you feel full Foods to include at each meal Include a protein source at every meal, choosing from: • Eggs - scrambled or poached • Meat/chicken - lean minced meat or chicken, cooked well in stews, casseroles or soups • Fish - well cooked with no bones, baked or steamed, not battered, fried or crumbed • Legumes - dried beans, lentils, baked beans etc, well-cooked in stews and soups • Low fat dairy - milk, yoghurt, soft cheese, custard, low fat and low sugar options Foods to limit Limit intake of these food groups, as they are not sources of protein. • Cereals - Weet-bix protein, porridge - add plenty of milk • Fruit - Soft fresh fruit • Vegetables - Well cooked • You will be able to slowly introduce these foods over the next few months.
