29 St George Obesity Surgery Unit | Bariatric Book | Multivitamin-mineral supplement As the amount of food you can eat is very small, you will not be able to get all the nutrition you need from food alone. Your small stomach is not producing as much acid and therefore some of vitamins and minerals are not absorbed as efficiently. If you have had one of the bypass surgeries, a section of your intestine is bypassed, making some nutrients harder to absorb. This could result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies. To prevent this, we strongly recommended that you: 1.) Take the following recommended vitamin and mineral supplementations as well as Calcium and Vitamin D 2.) Have the routine blood tests done 2 weeks prior to your next scheduled appointment 3.) Come to see us for your scheduled post op nutrition follow up Your New Eating Habits EAT REGULAR MEALS AND AVOID SNACKING • Be planned and prepared, take food with you to work • If you are busy at work use Optifast® TAKE SMALL MOUTHFULS • Using a small teaspoon may help • Chop food finely before you eat CHEW EVERYTHING THOROUGHLY • Get used to chewing everything thoroughly before swallowing • Make sure you swallow your mouthful before taking another bite EAT SLOWLY • Relax at meal times – sit down to eat • Make your meals last 30 minutes • Put your cutlery down between mouthfuls • Try not to eat in front of the TV, computer screen or whilst you are on the phone IF YOU ARE HUNGRY INCLUDE GOOD FOOD OPTIONS IN BETWEEN MEALS • As you are only eating a small amount of food, you may need to eat some protein foods in between to ensure good nutrition status. Other food groups you can introduce later are fruit and dairy foods. Remember we DO NOT encourage snacking/ grazing but a healthy mid meal may be beneficial to assist you achieving a balanced diet and also avoid overeating at your next meal. • Keep your fluid intake up • Ensure you have plenty of low-calorie drinks like water, tea coffee & diet drinks between meals to avoid dehydration DO NOT DRINK WITH MEALS • Stop drinking 30 minutes before you eat • Wait at least 30 minutes after a meal before drinking AVOID HIGH-CALORIE DRINKS • High calorie drinks will give you plenty of calories without making you feel full. • These drinks – fruit juices, soft drinks, cordials, smoothies, energy drinks such as Powerade and V drink – also may give you dumping syndrome, with symptoms such as \ nausea, diarrhoea, light headed, shaking and low blood pressure • Limit alcohol DAILY MULTIVITAMIN SUPPLEMENT • Continue with your multivitamin DAILY • Ca, D, Folate, B12 and Fe as per you specialist and or dietitian’s recommendation
