March 2025 WATERLINE | 39 BELLINGHAM MARINE DELIVERS SOLUTIONS FOR LEADING YACHT CLUBS INDUSTRY NEWS Bellingham Marine Australia (BMA) is proud to again work with the St George Motor Boat Club (SGMBC) to provide a design and construction, turnkey solution for the next stage in the Club’s development. “We are very excited to continue our 20-year relationship with St George on their latest marina expansion,” said Bruce Birtwistle, General Manager BMA. The new marina expansion will see: • Extensions to Arms A, B, C, D providing an addition 84 berths with a 50 year design life. • Unifloat® pontoon manufactured using six-sided concrete pontoons. • Relocation of the fuel wharf to include latest technologies. • Supply and installation of all service pedestals from Marine Technologies, M-Tech. • Demolition, design and fabrication of a new two-story floating Race Control Tower. • Enhanced fire equipment on all existing marina arms with new hydrants and hose reels. Adrian Vermeulen, CEO SGMBC said “The redevelopment will be a great outcome for our members and guests and includes an expanded marina, new car park, fine dining restaurant and expansive terrace and an upgraded cafe. BMA has always provided the club with professional service and a leading product to ensure great outcomes. Once complete, the marina will become the second largest in NSW with 310 berths.” David Blyth, President SGMBC further commented “This transformative $15 million investment will enhance the Club's facilities, offering unparalleled experiences for its 60,000 members and the broader Sydney community. During a weather event in 2017, the marina’s floating attenuator and timber pile seawall suffered significant damage, and long-term solutions were required. The club was looking for a customised solution, offering longevity, maintenance free and reliability and it was determined a full attenuator replacement would be undertaken. The old attenuator was removed and repurposed, a Bellingham Marine Unifloat® 4 m wide attenuator installed. In addition to the attenuator, a solution needed to be developed for the replacement of the timber sea wall. ATTENUATOR The Bellingham Marine solution; • Customised concrete Unifloat® pontoons to fit existing pile layout • Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) through rods, nuts, and concrete reinforcing • Custom built aluminium internal pile frames • HDPE airtight sleeves installed to all existing piles for corrosion protection • Double stacking FRP waler to each side of the pontoons for structural connection. FRP walers have a predicted 75+ year service life, 100% safe in most sensitive marine environments and are unaffected by moisture or immersion in water. The fitting of the FRP double walers on the attenuator is a world first providing huge strength characteristics unmatched from any timber solutions. SEAWALL The 180m sea wall had been constructed during the initial marina build some 30 years ago. That construction consisted of 26 concrete ‘A-frame’ supports, set with a vertical pile on the front and paired with a racker pile. Piles were driven into the seabed with a 2m wide headstock connecting the two. The headstocks were connected with two perpendicular concrete beams at the outer edges and timber piles driven into the seabed at 3m intervals on both sides of the structure. Shorter timber piles extending 2m below the low tide mark were suspended in the gaps to create a solid piled structure on both sides of the concrete A-frame. With the piles needing to be fully immersed in seawater, replacing the existing timber wall with new timber piles that need to meet environmental treatments was not considered a long-term solution. The existing A-frame structures were inspected and considered to be good condition with no need of replacement so an alternative light weight, cost effective solution that could be retro fitted to the existing structure was proposed. Bellingham Marine’s solution was to fabricate 6m wide x 7.7m long panels. The panels, made up of 100 x 100mm FRP box section were glued and bolted together with 8 FRP bolts. A 700mm strong back was glued and bolted to the back of the panel 4.5m down from the top. When the panel was fitted against the concrete A-frame piles the strong back gave the panel a finished angle of 70 degrees or 20 degrees off vertical. The connection to the piles was achieved with FRP bolts and special underwater plastic nuts, that were passed through grout filled 100 x 100mm box section to provide the additional compressive strength. The FRP box sections are made from vinyl ester resin, are resin rich and capable of being full submersed in water without any impact on structural integrity. The top of the panel is connected to the existing concrete beams by a custom-built aluminium angle bracket. The FRP panel, nonferrous sea wall is another world first.
