Luke 4.18-19 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, (Ash Wednesday) because he has anointed me (Lent 1) to bring good news to the poor. (Lent 2) He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives (Lent 3) and recovery of sight to the blind, (Lent 4) to let the oppressed go free, (Lent 5) to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ (Passion or Palm Sunday) …because he has anointed me…. The practice of anointing originally involved pouring aromatic oil over someone’s head (or body), but nowadays is typically simply marking someone’s forehead. In many church traditions such anointing oil is called ‘chrism oil’, meaning ‘anointing oil’. From earliest days, anointing in this way recognised the presence of God’s spirit upon the person and this is reflected in the Luke 4 passage. 33
