J
ules Joy describes
herself as an ‘arty
crafter’. Her handmade
jewellery and
accessories are unique,
quirky and colourful.
She loves making
things that are tactile,
but not too precious,
so they can be handled,
worn and enjoyed.
What do you make?
Unique
jewellery, fabric accessories
and hairclips, brooches and
fascinators. I make paper
garlands and pendants using
the illustrations from vintage
children’ books, and many of
my fabric flowers are made
from men’s vintage ties.
Business or hobby?
Definitely hobby! It’s not my
day job, if it was it would take
the fun out of it. I like the
escapism of it and the process
of creating.
How did you become
involved with creating
beautiful things?
I’ve always
been involved in artistic things.
If I’m not involved in theatre,
then I’m painting the walls of
the house. I love being creative,
but I can’t paint or draw –
although I wish I could.
What do you like most
about making things by
hand?
With my arty crafts
it is important to me that
as much is done by hand as
possible. I think it’s kind of
cheating if you buy five things
and glue them together. I
actually enjoy the process, it’s
more important to me than
the finished product. With my
flower-making I don’t use a
pattern, so no two are alike.
Do you often make things
you can’t part with?
I really
try to let everything go. I have
a background in floral artistry
and because everything you
work with is fresh and organic
there are time constraints. I
would have these large show
pieces I would put together
and I would always give them
away.
It’s not common, I’m not
too precious. I do have one
fascinator I kept,
because I would be
hard-pressed to make
another one like it.
Your Facebook page
is called Original
Designs by Jules Joy
“Madame Quaintrelle”.
Explain?
I saw the word
quaintrelle pop up on a
Facebook newsfeed and I fell
in love with the terminology.
(Quaintrelle (n.) a woman who
emphasises a life of passion,
expressed through personal
style, leisurely pastimes,
charm and cultivation of one’s
pleasures.)
Where can people find
your pieces?
Occasionally
at markets, Muswellbrook
markets in particular, because I
like to keep things local.
