Businesses operating on the Central Coast
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Counts of Central Coast businesses, including entries and
exits, June 2007 to June 2011 there were 22,047 businesses operating on the Central Coast as at June 2011.
It will be seen from the Table below that of the total 57% are non employing businesses indicating that
many would be sub-contractors. It will also be seen that almost all of the businesses, 96.5%, are in the
small business category.

Labour force
Census 2011 data shows that of the 251,489 persons
aged over 15 years on Census night, 140,700 were
in work or looking for work. This comprised 73,884
males and 66,816 females. The number of persons
unemployed was 9,609 while the number of persons
not in the labour force was 96,918 – made up of
39,032 males and 57,886 females.
On Census night 5,920 persons were working
from home.
According to the ABS Labour Force Survey for
February 2013 Quarter 2013, the number of people
in work was 153,400 which compares with the same
quarter in 2012 when the number was 142,700.
Unemployment was 8,900 or 5.5% for 2013
compared with 9,700 or 6.4% in 2012.
These statistics include Central Coast residents
who commute to Sydney or the Hunter region
each day for work. Anecdotally, it is estimated that
around 45,000 residents now commute. On this
basis it is estimated that 29.3% of those in work
actually commute.
