Conversely, it also means we have to be quite critical and vigilant of the “competition sins” that might also be present when self- critiquing. For example, one of the greatest sins that you see in photo competitions is the overuse of things like the saturation slider. You see that over and over again, people turning up the levels too high. And it doesn’t have to be just saturation, either. It can be sharpness, or extreme focal lengths, all kinds of things. We assume that if some saturation is good then more is better, even black and white looked popular last time, let’s do that without considering whether it is the best presentation of that image. We often make the mistake of assuming that it’s all about technique rather than vision.
