The NDIS Edition 2016

Scholarships

2016

ParaQuad

announced for

The Scholarship program aims to

support people with a spinal cord

injury and like neurological disability

to pursue educational and career

training. This year’s recipients

ranged in age from 19 to 48 years

old and are studying a wide range

of courses.

The ParaQuad NSW Scholarship program this year awarded 10 ParaQuad

members a scholarship to assist with the costs of their educational pursuits

in 2016, with each recipient eligible for up to $5000

In the scholarship spotlight

Domonic Freestone

An avid outdoorsman, Domonic

acquired tetraplegia from

a diving accident in 2005.

Currently Domonic is in his third

year of a Bachelor of Visual

Communications Design degree

at the University of Newcastle

and is a first time ParaQuad

scholarship recipient. His goal

is to pursue a career in Graphic

Design after graduation.

‘Photography has been my area

that I find really enjoyable’, he

said. ‘It is my hope that (with the

scholarship program) I can buy

(camera) equipment that will

allow me to gain a competitive

edge over others at the same

stage in their creative careers’.

Amy Pilson

A first time ParaQuad recipient,

Amy Pilson, dreams of working

in youth drug and alcohol

counselling and mental health,

‘I am passionate about this

industry’, Amy said, ‘and this

scholarship will assist me in

getting set up properly with an

ergonomic electric desk and

desktop computer along with

some travel costs for extra study

meetings and industry work

experience’.

Amy had a non traumatic

spinal cord infarction (a stroke

within the spinal cord) in 2008

which caused paraplegia at T8

level. Amy’s goal this year is to

complete her Certificate IV in

Youth Services and continue her

studies even further and do a

diploma in 2017.
