Well done to all of our photographers who had images submitted. This year’s theme was “This is Australia”, and by the look of the major winning Award entries, there were lots of standout iconic images with ANZAC, Sydney Harbour, Landscapes and Indigenous icons presented. Apparently, they are keeping with the Australia subject next year, but with a slightly dierent theme. We will keep an eye out and try and improve out placing. Talking of winning images, we are getting lots of fantastic images coming through in our monthly competition, with plenty of Golds being awarded from our esteemed judges. Our July competition saw a large number of Golds awarded, with our judge Craig Franke highlighting the wonderful eorts both in Digital and Print categories. Craig commented that he enjoys judging at Fremantle, because of the amazing range of images he’s allowed to assess and the variety that is always presented especially from our travelling members. The club meets at 7.30pm on the first and third Tuesday of every month (except January) at the North Fremantle Community Hall: 4 Thompson Road, North Fremantle (Harvest Road end). See the map at the bottom of our home page: www. fremantlecameraclub.com. The first Tuesday is an educational evening and the third Tuesday is competition night. In addition there are social outings organised to improve and share our photography skills. See information in this month’s Freographic and on the website. Guests are always welcome. FREOGRAPHIC July 2023 EDUCATION REPORT 3 Education Report Howard works in oil and acrylics and Sally works in watercolours. So, while they both end up with very dierent looking works, it’s generally within the variations of the media that are the biggest dierences in their art. Howard discussed lots of the commonality between their art form and photography, but also highlighted the biggest dierences. “There are many dierences between photography and painting, but for me, the biggest dierence is the starting point of the technical process of creating the image”. “I think the artist and the photographer might both look at a person or scene and consider how to represent it, but while the photographer might well contemplate ways to manipulate the image with software to achieve the result they want, they initially have to capture the image itself, which means concentrating on framing, exposure, focus, depth of field and potentially lighting, etc”. “The painter on the other hand, inspired by the same person or scene, starts with a blank sheet of paper or canvas. In terms of landscape, whether they are working “en plein air” or in a studio, they start with the same blank support, on which they begin the physical or technical process of building their response to the subject”. “So, for both, there is an intellectual or emotional process, which in many ways is the same, but for the photographer, the technical process has to start immediately – he or she must respond in the moment almost – while the painter can choose when to initiate the process of producing their response. Ultimately, whether we are talking about painting, sculpture, writing, design or photography, we are creatives, and when we put our work on display, we are subject to, and sometimes possibly victims of, the judgemental eye”. I think Howard summed up his presentation beautifully the dilemma we often face in judging of our images, and that is – does the technical proficiency and expertise of the image supersede the other aspects we hope that might be considered as equally important. Our July Education presentation was done by Howard and Sally Worth from Alchemy Creative. Although Sally couldn’t join us, Howard gave us a fantastic talk on “Art and Photography”, especially from their own perspective. JULY http://www.alchemycreative.com.au Print by Howard Worth

Education Night Capturing the bond between animals and their people has become a feature of her pet photography. In recognising the power of an image to raise awareness of wildlife issues, photography has become a focus in her wildlife conservation articles. Her wildlife imagery has allowed her to combine a love of animals and art in her images. In addition, they help her share the beauty and fragility of what she sees through her eyes and lens in the articles she writes for her websites.
