April 2023 FREOGRAPHIC NEWS 2 Pat Hallaran President During the year we will all be exposed to approx. 60-80 images a month, that no doubt will vary in quality, characteristics, and artistic merit. Aside from the judge’s feedback, you will also have the opportunity to discuss with other club members their views on the images presented and gain insights on the work of others. As well as learning from others, equally we learn that photography is an art and not a science, and therefore there are no universal rights or wrongs. What one judge might love, another equally experienced judge may defiantly not love. Listening to a range of views on our images is an essential step in developing your photography and building confidence in it. For me (and hopefully many others), there are a couple of aspects I think I can improve on, aside from the typical judge’s feedback already mentioned. To move to high level Award status (i.e. Gold and Silver), does the image capture the attention of the viewer (i.e. some WOW factor or significance in the image that they have never seen before); and secondly, does the image provide some visual communication, some emotion or connection that resonates with the viewer. This ultimately is what they refer to as Art Photography. Although I’d have to say there is a caveat on that, and that is: I’d like to think that most images have been captured with a technical quality that is inherent in the craft of the photographer at Camera Club level. Although to Adam Smalley who took out the Open Colour and Mono Awards at the York Photographic Awards for 2023. Congratulations I’d also have to say some of my biggest stuff-ups have turned out to be amazingly special images .. hahah. Before signing off, for this month, big thanks to Marlene on organising the Education night presentations so far, Liz and Chris for the Supper service, and the rest of the committee who do a fab job keeping the club running. It goes without saying that the strength of the club doesn’t come from the individuals but the collective contribution of all of our members, so get involved and you might even find it helps your photography. Finally, congratulations to Adam Smalley who took out the Open Colour and Mono Awards at the York Photographic Awards for 2023. And a big congrats to Helen Rowbottom who took out the People’s Choice Award for March with her ‘Red Footed Booby’ image, and to Paul Anderson, one of our newest members who took out the People’s Choice Award in April with his “Smoko” image. Great to see some beautiful prints coming through in competition, so don’t be afraid to submit one of your images in Print, you might be another Award winner. Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.
