God’s Own Country

of our ancestors show our loved one the way home to Dinewan, the Milky Way. Our loved one completes their journey and arrives at the Great Corroboree and is welcomed to the Dreaming. How wonderful it is when we know that the sun shines over us by day, the giver of life. And in the nighttime the stars, our ancestors, are watching over us at night as our protection. Our loved one is watching over us. We become those nighttime campfires as ancestors watching over each and every one of us. People have always told stories about the sun, moon and stars. The Seven Sisters stories and songlines teach us that there are markers in our life journeys that give us directions in our travels. Sometimes they are physical markers and sometimes spiritual markers. The Star over Bethlehem was one of those markers. It gave the physical sign to guide the wise men to the baby Jesus, but also the spiritual marker that this was a special baby. A baby that had been predicted to arrive was going to change you and me forever. The star story of the ancestors’ campfires is a story that teaches us that we are always being watched over. When we are moving forwards, we should always be walking backwards. When you walk backwards the wind, dust and cold are not in our face. We can walk a straight line, walking backwards, staying on the path we needed to be. We are watching our tracks. By knowing where we have been, we can know how far we have come. We don’t repeat the mistakes we have made before. Studying scripture is an exercise in walking backwards. We can know that God is going to be there for us because he has always been there for us throughout history, even though at times we may not 48
