AVA Annual Conference | 2018 Conference Handbook | #AVAConference 13 Theresa De Porter (USA) Stream: Behaviour Williana Basuki (USA) Stream: Dentistry Introducing our Keynote Speakers Theresa is a Board Certified Veterinary Behaviourist at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services in metropolitan Detroit Michigan USA. She is a Fear FreeSM Certified professional and a member of the Fear FreeSM Advisory Group (http://www.fearfreepets.com ). She has a Diplomate in both the American College of Veterinary Behaviourists (ACVB) and European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine (ECAWBM) and graduated from Purdue in 1992. Theresa has authored chapters on feline aggression, car ride anxiety, pheromones and psychopharmacology. Research interests include anxiolytic nutraceuticals, pheromones and aggression between housemate cats. Sessions include: • Aggressive dogs 1 & 2 • Anxiety in cats • Fear free clinics • Managing multiple cats • Phobias • Puppy class • Raising a sane dog DVM graduate of 1964 from the Ontario Veterinary College, Canada. Jean has 5 decades of veterinary clinical and diagnostic research, over 150 publications, and membership in national and international committees. Hemopet, her non-profit national animal blood bank was started in 1986, and supplies canine blood products throughout the USA and Hong Kong, plus educational and clinical diagnostic services (www.hemopet.org) . She is Co-Trustee of the Rabies Challenge Fund to assess safety and duration of immunity from rabies vaccines (www. rabieschallengefund.org ). She has written 2 popular pet health books together with Diana Laverdure; and holds 25 patents. Sessions include: • Cellular Oxidative stress and cancers • Genomics, Genetics and Epigenetics as related to Animal Health and Longevity • Nutrition with emphasis on functional foods and nutrigenomics • Setting up and operating animal blood banks • Vaccine essentials and potential adverse events Dr Williana Basuki was born and grew up in Indonesia. She earned her veterinary degree at the University of Queensland in 2010. After university, she embarked on her journey as a small animal practitioner before entering a rotating internship followed by a surgery internship at Queensland Veterinary Specialist and Pet Emergency in Brisbane. She completed a 3-year residency in Oral Surgery and Dentistry and Master degree program at Colorado State University (USA). She currently works at Tufts Veterinary and Emergency Treatment and Specialties in Walpole, Massachusetts. Sessions include: • Complications of dental extractions • Feline gingivostomatitis - things that we all need to know! • Feline tooth resorption • Intraoral radiographs – technique and interpretation • Jaw fractures: non-invasive stabilisation • Oral exam and anatomy: why is this important? • Periodontal disease – pathogenesis and treatment options • Regional nerve blocks in canine and feline dentistry • Tools of the trade: what equipment do I need? Tim is Professor of Farm Animal Reproduction & Health at Massey University, New Zealand. He graduated from Bristol University to initially work in cattle practice and cattle AI in the UK. After his PhD in reproductive physiology at Nottingham University, he lectured in Veterinary Reproduction & Obstetrics at Bristol University. In 1997, he moved to Massey University, where he was Dean of Veterinary Sciences between 2011 and 2016. Tim is a registered specialist in veterinary reproduction with the RCVS and ECAR. His research interests are in reproduction in domestic animals, and in teaching and learning in veterinary students. He is the author of two major text books, Veterinary Reproduction & Obstetrics (now entering its 10th edition) and Diseases of Cattle in Australasia.
