59 Provider Information What is Scope of Practice? A person completing a clinical task will have the legislative authority to undertake that task and the capability to perform the task. The person undertaking the task will have the background knowledge and ongoing training to perform the task safely within organisational policy. The person undertaking the task will have mastered the required skills and has demonstrated competency to complete the task to a best practice guideline. The person undertaking the task adheres to policy and protocols and accepts responsibility for referring on to a senior person or clinician. Some tasks such as simple wound care, taking baseline measurements e.g. Blood Glucose Levels will require competency testing to be undertaken and verified by a Registered Nurse. Your organisation should have a clear policy relating to clinical care tasks and accompanying competency tests. We include a sample on page 63.
